UAD card... worth it?
« on: September 20, 2008, 01:17:37 AM »
Hey all.. So I had never heard of a UAD card but a friend mentioned it and I have a chance to pick one up for less than 1/2 the new price at $600.  Has anyone used one?  Is it worth the cost to edit through the card?  Does it actually give you better quality results or does it just do the same thing faster?  I'm pretty tempted to pick this up... Even if I don't use it I'm pretty sure I can offer it up for more than I paid.

Edit:
DSatz... This may be one for you. :-}

I actually don't use too many plugins now.  I've really tried to find gear I like the sound of so I try not to edit my recordings as much as possible.  For the most part just a Matrix or M/S mix, normalize, MBit+ dither and resample.  I was told that the UAD card was the version that came bundled with 'all' the premium VST plugins  I don't have a list of them but the license would be transferred.  If I pick up the card it is coming from someone I met that was responsible for recording/editing alot of ASU music projects.  He's now graduated but without a job and needs cash.

Then you have absolutely ZERO need for a UAD-1.

Thanks for the input. T+  Sounds like the UAD would really not be of use to me.  It just sounded so tempting when it was described to me.  I think I'm still going to run down to my friends house today.  He wants to show me what he would do to a few of my recordings.  It should be interesting to see what he would do with a few of my shows.

I also have a few UAD-1 cards and nothing replaces a real compressor or a real eq... NOTHING.. plug ins dont replace a fat analog path. One of these days these guys using computers and plug ins will realize that :)
