that will be easy to set up and easy to open the ports necessary to use bit torrent?
I need to hook up a 2nd computer to my cable modem but don't want to have firewall issues when hosting/downloading shows via bit torrent.

They're all pretty good and relatively easy to set up these days. I'd recommend sticking with a name brand like LinkSys or NetGear. I use a NetGear RT314, I think, but I'm not sure if they make 'em anymore - I bought mine several years ago. Maybe someone who's bought one recently will have some info. Or maybe try one that's on this guy's "how to" list (http://knowbuddy.dyndns.org:81/torrent/btclientconfig.html) for configuring routers to support BT.

The linksys and netgear units are adequate and especially cheap if you do not need wireless or already have wireless. The management for these is an idiot proof web interface.
personally i use a doorstop machine w/ openbsd.

Do you need wireless? If so stay clear of Belkin cards and routers. I'd suggest a D-Link with Super G. Any name-brand should do for non-wireless.

personally i use a doorstop machine w/ openbsd.
same here. we setup a Smoothwall box this weekend with 3 zones. works perfectly and the install took all of 10 mins including setting up the rules for ip/port forwarding

Asante makes very nice professional and personal routers. Easy port managment, nice logging features, web based interfaces, etc. Similar to Linksys, NetGear fair but a little more class/quality IMHO. You could say the same for SMC

All IMHO, we use Asante stuff here at work and I like it alot. I bought a cheapie cheap no name router at TigerDirect and it works beautifully at home.

I wouldn't go with SMC... I went home for christmas and my folks had bought an SMC and the thing was garbage.... You had to individually open the ports you want (no range support), and i think you could only open up about a dozen... it was a proper PITA, especially because i only needed it for a week....
They may have new firmware or something to completely invalidate everything i just said though...

i can also vouch for asante....i have one of thier friendlynet cable routers and it has a print server dealie. i think they are a little more expensive than linksys and netgear stuff.
i am also using a netgear 4 port hub that i got at best buy for about $20.
all this to hook up 5 computers in my home.
oh, and i bought the asante because it was macintosh friendly and at the time i only had macs on my home network.
some days i wish i had gone wireless...especially when trying to phish-tape wires cat-5 cabling thru floors and walls.

i had ease opening my BT ports with the linksys (sysco) router. FTP was another story but I did eventually get it to work.

if you need wireless im selling my microsoft router with a pci card :-)

I now have a Netgear wired router and I can't get it working for BT for the life of me.
I've contacted Netgear support and they've ignored me.
I posted a question on the Netgear router messageboard with no responses.
I have created rules for BT and followed directions but I'm still firewalled.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

That Netgear stuff from wal-mart is crap...I fooled with that thing at my parents house for days...
Solution - I lent them my Microsoft wireless rig and had it working flawlessly in 15 minutes....they cant beleive it...
AVOID NETGEAR MR814 AT ALL COSTS!!!!!
