Title: Got rig ... need bag. Is this a crazy idea?
Post by: stvgray on January 16, 2004, 11:02:25 PM
I've been thinking a cheap-but-good solution would be a foam-insulated cooler bag. Here are some possibilities:

http://www.rivercityluggage.com/cooler_bags.html

Have to measure my rig, but it seems like the heavy-duty 9-can model might be just right.

Or are there better solutions that everybody but me knows about?

My rig is:

-- DAP1
-- SLA battery
-- UA-5
-- homebrew 3000 mA battery

-- Oktava MK012s
-- AT8410a shockmounts

Think there's any padding in it?

doubt it. It has shelves for your gear .....to stack on different levels

Here is a pic of the bag in use:

Is that yours? Does your stuff slop around inside it when you're lugging it around?

no. the owner is in this thread
http://www.taperssection.com/yabbse/index.php?board=20;action=display;threadid=12423

doesn't look like things would slop around....not when you put your batts on the bottom....then your p1 on the shelf with the ua5 on top....then your mics, shocks and cables....the bag would be packed enough that stuff wouldn't have room to move around...

its a piece of shit. i bought one a couple months ago bc of price, when i saw it mentioned in another thread, and the shelves broke from just trying to get my gear negotiated around in the bag, it never saw a show. if you want the bag and a broken shelf, its yours for the cost of shipping.

hopefully mine will work out. If not, it cost me 16 to find out.

honestly though if you can find one of the older Targus Rakgears, where the shelves are supported on all 4 corners, you would be well off.  The shelves support the weight better than that crap where they only attached in the back.  I love mine...makes setup and teardown a breeze!

YMMV...

I bought pne a few months ago and love it.  I ran my sla on the bottom, V2/Mp2 in the middle and ADC20 (turned sideways) on the top shelf.  I've got a velco strap around the ADC20 to keep it from moving.  Have all the cables connected, quick setup/teardown.

I just ordered another to use as a regular backpack, it's pretty comfortable.

i think the shelves are padded, and you could always duct tape bubble wrap to line the inside for extra protection.

I just got ordered one, probably use it more fopr storage at home than taking into shows.

That sucks.  I picked one up and while I haven't used it much - maybe half a dozen times - I've had zero problems with it.

Nice offer by Rabhan here - maybe someone can do the Target shelf thing with this pack.

one thing though, with the cooler bags, they insulate heat.  don't put your ad1000 in there, it will overheat.

Back to the topic for a minute ... seems like I want the control panels of my units facing up, where I'm able to look down at them while standing or squatting. With that Targus thing, I'd have to stand on my head to look at the panels, wouldn't I?

Only if you put your gear onto the shelves upside down.

might fit better sideways, and you won't necessarily need right-angle connectors

I used a marlboro cooler for my gear for a long time. I still break it out every once in a while

the kickflip bag will work fine, last check my pics from garaj mahal last wensday in the rig pics section, i'm using that bag.  my rig would be simular in size as yours. i was running a wmod ua-5 > casio da-7 which is simular in size to the dap1, running it i was using a 12 amphr sla, huge brick, that was on the bottom..  i thought i got a deal on it, for like 30..  but 9.99 i might have to buy another

I've never carried my stuff in a back pack.
Would the $9.99 Kick Flip Pack work for my rig?
AD-1000
2 -12v SLA's
Octavas (soon to be TL's)

I think it would fit, though it would probably require running the AD1K sideways in the bag - not ideal by any stretch.  I think a good setup for the longer and narrower Apogees is the other RakGear bags people have talked about, the ones with a "laptop" sleeve and shelves supported on all four corners.  The Apogee runs vertically in the laptop sleeve, the rest of your gear runs on the shelves.  Someone who runs this can probably explain better than me.   :-\

Edit: Oops, didn't see you were gonna be running TLs soon.  In that case, yeah, Bean's right - the KickFlip will be too small.

Can someone give me a line on a model number or a link to the pack that would work for my rig?
