Title: Any way of knowing how much life is left in an AD1000 ?
Post by: Xpanding Man on March 21, 2004, 02:19:56 PM
Does the number of "passes" really mean anything ?

mine has 'passed' the same # of times since I got it back from Paul Plotnic, rigth to left about 8 times then stops, same for about 16 months

also, what's the fatality rate ?  does EVERY apogee die that same word clock death eventually ?

See if you can quickly check how much smoke is left in the unit. Don't let any out, though.

theres really no way of knowing how much life is left, at some point, all the smoke will just come out of it and it will have to be sent to the funeral home like mine did back in november

the wc will go and the digi board will go, impossible to say when. As far as passes go, I've had some that locked in at 3, some 5, some 8, not sure why. doesn't necessarily mean anything. symptom of beginning to lose digi board are signal dropouts, after you've ruled out cable/15 pin issues, when you begin to lose clock, you'll lose lock.

how many of these things have you owned ?  or is it that you've seen/heard of some at 3, some 5, some 8 passes ?

if you keep it in good condition- keep it at a decent temperature (which for the ad1ks is anything below hot skillet level) and baby it, you should have plenty more life in it

do you have their carcasses stuffed and mounted on your wall like taxidermy?  You could have little plaques underneath each one like:

RIP [serial no.]
date of purchase - date of incineration
venue where it finally bit it
examples of great tapes made with it.

the first one I got from masterpiece in 01, doa. they were kind enough to find me another one. had that one for a year, sold it to callery to get a mme. I think it died on callery a few months ago.  ;D

then the damn mme wasn't being shipped on time, as we all know, got tired of going eaa>p-1, bought Davis' ad1000, which Gary had at the time in his shop, and said was "fine, I bench tested it for hours". made it ONE show, then the digital board died. I was then, to my knowledge, the one and only participant in the one day "apogee ad1000>mme trade in program. still have the mme I got in trade. bought an ad1k about a year ago, got tired of dealing with it, sold it, think the kid who bought it reversed polarity and blew it up.

wish I had all 4 to mount on the wall, Damon. with best show pulled, worst, and date of death.
