V2 in the red
« on: March 07, 2004, 11:04:32 AM »
I just started running V2>minime.  I keep the mini's gain low and keep the v2 hot.  Seems the red lights have been flashing a lot. Is this a bad thing?  To my ears it sounds fine.  Should I turn the minime up a little to aviod the red lights?  Any help would be great.

The V2s red lights come on at either 6 or 10db before clipping so you should be fine. I use to hit redds regularlly...

as long as you aren't pegging them red's on solid for a long time you should be fine...it likes to be run hot.

ive seen people run the v2 this way, although i run it low and the sbm1 high ive never had the problem, but it seems like i might start to have to hit some reds moving to the minime line in stage, we'll see next week

The red starts to light up at 10db before clipping.

if i were you, i'd calibrate the mme to the v2 as described on the sonic sense website and then only adjust using the pots on the v2.  no screwdrivers!  this is a killer setup.  i'd also suggest getting an AES to 7pin cable to avoid the mme's coax out.  i had issues with mine.

ditto what damon said, an xlr>coax is money well spent. and you can either calibrate the v2 to the mme, or just turn the screwpots all the way down, and just run the v2 wherever you want it. I believe nominal gain on the mme is like 11 db line in with the pots all the way down, so you'll probably generally be running the v2 at like 30 or so. However, when I called apogee, they were unable to tell me, or too lazy to look up, what the nominal gain was line-in.

Probably just too lazy...  ;)

when you say turn the MMe up, do you mean the gain or the cal pots?
Do what Damon said and calibrate the MMe!

depends on what sound you're looking for. calibrating v2>mme is gonna mean more mme pre in the mix, turning the cal pots all the way down is gonna mean more v2. I think.

this is what im thinking, should i pick up an oade 7pin and get someone to mod an aes>rca digi cable for me, i have a 12 ft rat shack orange spdf cable that can be sent to the chopping block, but i also have a right angle spdf cable, would that help at all with the mme spdf out???

you need a pro deck to run out of the aes on the minime.
