Help decidiing on first mic for my new Sharp MS722
«

I just bought a Sharp MS722 Minidisc, and needed help deciding on which mic to get.
I wanna stay under 100 dollars, and i need to know if my Minidisc has plug in power, and if i need a battery box. I havent got the unit yet, so im not sure.
Heres what i was choosing from:
http://www.buy.com/retail/product.asp?sku=90099950&loc=12435&sp=1
http://www.giant-squid-audio-lab.com/gs/gs-poweredbattery1.htm
http://www.minidisco.com/sp-bmc3.html
Or i was thinking i would go with any standard stearo sound professionals mic.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

That Sharp unit should provide plug-in power (mic-in). However, unless you are recording real quiet acoustical music, it will overload and distort quite easily.
For most folks recording loud shows microphones powered by a battery box ran line-in (not mic-in) will improve results. A pre-amp and phantom powered microphones will imporve results even more so.
I suggest the SP-CMC-4
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-CMC-4
(SP modded Audio Technica 853s) and the SP-SPSB-6 battery box w/ selectable bass roll-off filter
http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-SPSB-6
Those will run $260 without shipping. You can also browse the Yard Sale for people here selling their mics, pfife has some starting mics for sale, I don't know what he's looking to get though.
Hope this helps.

As a starter mic, I was impressed with the performance of the Sony ECM-717. Its a bit lacking in bass, but its not too bad for the price (around $75.00). Its powered by an internal watch battery, and run into the mic input.

Thanks for the advice... i went with the standard binuruals from soundprofessionals, with the battery box that Zaphod reccomended. I went with the "Low Sensetivity" option, was that a good choice?

Yeah you should be satisfied with the results. Those were my first mics, only recorded one show and then my luggage got stolen.
The low sensitivity version is good for recording really loud music, best ran into the battery box then into the line in on the recorder. Good luck and a +T for getting started.
