stealthing question (AKG)
« on: November 20, 2005, 10:44:22 AM »
hi : )

i hope this is the right place to post.
im a newbie so bear with or ignore please : )
i have some questions re: ask stealth

only been taping since april with dat and csb and want to lose the csb and run akg,
i wont be changing to solid state recorder anytime soon, but i want some good mics!
i heard some ck91 tapes that blew me away, and my ears are telling me they will be a better upgrade choice than dpa...

Problem Is:
im stealth, 100%, im not a fan of any taper friendly bands so i will be patted down or wanded
at almost every show ill ever see, likely for the rest of my life..

i also don't understand the "open taper language" actives, bodies, mic stand, etc.
all i know is:
mini mics > batter box > dat
and akg stealth info seems a vert limited topic here......

So I Come To Ask:
what i would need to run ck91 caps into a dat with the least amount of things
between the caps and the dat to make it easy to stealth through the door.

im getting very comfortable walking in with equipment,
but walking through the door with 2 big mic bodies, caps, a preamp, a power supply, a dat,
phantom power box, and a stack of other boxes seems to worry me a little bit ............................................

Is there a more stealth solution??
Can i bypass the bodies and run:
ck91>MK 90/3 + H 98>small power supply>line in on pcm-m1?

i get the impression the mic body is just a power supply, is this right?

Or will i need mic bodies?

If i have to have the mic bodies,  can i just run:
ck91>mk90>SE 300 B >then what between the body and dat? just a cable? >pcm-m1 linein

Do i need phantom? or can i rig them to a 9volt mini power supply?

am i going to need an sbm1 to get a good sound? or can i do direct into linein and get "akg sound"?

Any advice would be greatly GREATLY APPRECIATED!
I want to get some nice mics shortly after the new year, and i think ck9x are perfect for me if i can rig them stelathy.

Thanx!!

I believe someone on the boards did a DIY box which ended up removing the bodies from the equation.  Most people use the "active" cables setup between the caps and the bodies.  You'll need phantom power to run the mics.  You can use a Deneke PS2 which provides just that, but you'll probably need some way to add gain in the equation.  I used some in-line transformers to bring the levels up near line-in levels.  You could also go with an Sound Devices MP-2 which is a mic preamp that provides phantom power, and adjustable gain.  Sanjay ran this setup into a JB3 and made many nice tapes.   Another option I would consider would be the DPA 4061's.  Those can be run off a simple battery box, and are a lot smaller than the ck 91's.  Good luck!

You will need bodies with the actives.

The homemade AKG actives can be homemade, PM poorlyconditioned for instructions.

I think you'd be better investing in a pair of DPA's or AT853's because the 91'a are very large for stealthing.

The most streamlined non-homebrew solution (if you wish to run ck91's) would be:

ck91>MK 90/3 + H 98>se 300 bodies>xlr>1/4"TRS>MT 2496

the nice thing about the 391 actives is that they take phantom power of 9-52v...perfect for the MT 2496...the only concern I may have is whether there is adequate gain from the Mt...you may need to run it with the +27db option.
