is SACD DEAD?
« on: July 12, 2012, 09:07:15 PM »
Well, the subject line says it. I really like SACD/DSD, but haven't gone looking for new titles in a couple of years. I used to order from AcousticSounds online, after finding out a local audiophile shop was simply ordering from them too.

But, that store seems to have gone under.
Is anybody still releasing titles on SACD? I'm more of a jazz/blues/rock fan than classical.

What about DVD-A? I assume that one really is dead... Is anybody releasing high-resolution PCM recordings, similar to what Hires Records used to do? (24/192?

thanks for any info/help,

Chris

I think DVD-a has been replaced or is being replaced with bluray.

I think all of Nick Cave's current release programme is coming out in double packs of cd + DVD-A.

Actually, there are now over 7000 titles on SACD. There is massively more hi-rez content on sacd than via downloads. Amazon has thousands of SACD ... just do a search for sacd on their music store. Acousticsounds does seem to specialise in the jazz releases ... seems most of their top-selling titles are SACDs these days.  For a listing of recent jazz releases on SACD, see for instance:

http://www.sa-cd.net/titles/2/0/date/100/1

I also prefer the pure DSD releases ... just seem closer to vinyl ... natural and warm.

Not dead yet, but dying a slow death for sure. I just received a copy of the brand new mono sacd release of Miles Davis Milestones on the MoFi Label.

Here's a good site that hasn't been mentioned yet in this thread:

My frustration with SACD is the absurdly high prices for OOP discs.  Damn shame the labels allow popular discs to go OOP.  Hopefully blu-ray will become a popular multi-channel delivery medium in the near future.

edit:  thanks for the links...looks like I have some discs to order!    ;D

Maybe not dead, but the audience for people who will pay upwards of $30 for a CD is very limited.  I just downloaded three HD jazz albums through HD Tracks last night for $45 and they sound really great.

Yes, I always prefer physical products but at twice the price?  I like HD Tracks so much because their HD digital downloads are priced similarly to physical normal resolution CDs.
