Title: Issues: FLAC w/ vista
Post by: Big Perm on October 10, 2009, 06:52:56 PM
I can not get flac to work on my laptop which has vista.  It apears that it is just not installing correctly.  Everything goes fine execpt when I try to encode with it, i get nothing...a flash of the c:/ screen, but too fast to read what it says...
any help??

Just redirect the stdout to a text file (flac -q8 test.wav > output.txt). Then check the text file for errors.

I'm using the "command-line tools and Winamp2 plugin only" edition of flac on Vista.

Avoid spaces in the name of the installation folder (e.g. use c:\codecs\flac) and also make sure to add the folder name containing the flac.exe file to your PATH environment variable.

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=13478&package_id=12675 (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=13478&package_id=12675)

Best I have been able to determine, is that the FLAC app has to write out files to the directory it is installed to... so, because Vista has strong security rules and FLAC is old, the 2 are butting heads

Install FLAC to your "desktop" directory and see if it works, when it does, it is because Vista wont allow temp files in the "program files" directory, as it is designed to use the user's "application data" directory

Have to admit that I happily used FLAC Frontend for years until I got a machine running Vista.  Didn't want to deal with the hassle of getting FFE to run properly so I switched to Trader's Little Helper.  Rock solid and no hiccups since.

FWIW, I have figured out that the issue with FFE is that you have to put the FLAC folder in to your documents directory.
Vista has rules about where files can be written, and FFE was written to use a temp file in its installation directory, and by Vista UAC rules, this is a no-no.
I am going to install Windows 7 this week, so I am sure that will be an interesting challenge as well.

please post an update on the windows 7!  I am about to buy a new laptop, and am going to have to deal with this as well.  I am not that great at figuring this crap out on my own so any help would be greatly appreciated  ;D

re: Win 7

FLAC Frontend works in compatibility mode.  Trader's Little Helper works out of the box.
