What is wrong with this conversion?
« on: March 29, 2004, 06:01:27 PM »
OK, so I taped John Mayer and Guster on Saturday night, and I went to convert them yesterday.  Guster went just fine...got it all done and up on the archive, you can check out a track here:  http://www.archive.org/download/guster2004-03-27.flac16/guster2004-03-27t09.flac .

Anyway, I go to convert the Mayer show, and I keep getting this "device not connected" or something as its uploading.  This happens at divverent points (anywhere from 10 - 70%).  Finally I get the whole thing uploaded, and as I'm listening to it, it sounds totally wrong.  Here's a clip:  http://ccronks.the-remedy.org/test.wav .  And that just sounds like crap.  Any ideas on what I did wrong?  Thanks!

EDIT:  I forgot to mention that I'm running Giant Squids > Batt Box > JB3.

Did your batt box batteries die, or acquire a loose connection, .  Guster sounds good.  I do not think anything in the transfer could have caused that, might be a JB3 issue at recording time.

Well, that seems to be it.  I just checked the battery and it's damn near dead.  Thanks for the help man.  Think I should still release this show?  There was one other taper there running akg's a few rows behind me, but who knows if we'll ever see that tape.  Thanks again man, I'd +t if I could :)

That actually sounds more like the JB3 input jack problem.   The plug may have come partially out between shows.  The current draw on a battery box/mic combo is so low it's quite unlikely that you'd get one good show and one bad one.

check the input jack problem here http://members.rogers.com/traderdave/audio

Does the show sound okay though headphones as played back on the JB3? If it sounds normal on the JB3, the problem is the transfer, if it sounds the same, the problem is in the recording. To my ear, it does sound like the cable was not connected tightly, which I've heard can be a problem because the line in on the JB3 is small and poorly designed.

Hmmm.....looking further into it, it could also be a problem on the connection with from the mics to the JB3.  It sounds exactly like that on the JB3, so it's nothing to do with the conversion.  However, I did just buy a new pair of squids and sell the old ones to a friend of mine, and I tested them out this morning, and they seem to work.

How would a second battery fix an improperly seating connector?

It's obvious - you jam the extra battery in your bag all nice and tight so it applies constant pressure to the cable, keeping it firmly seated.  You might need a right angle connector for this technique to work properly  ;D
