No Mac support - unfortunate.

No original media backup - easily mitigated.  I keep my audio copy and a FLAC copy, and I distribute almost all of my recordings (at least those I give a damn about) to others (archive.org, bluegrassbox.com, or just the broader trading community at places like bt.etree.org.  If my FLAC'd recordings are distributed in the trading pool, they're backed up, IMO.

I would agree with Brian, especially wrt Archive.org related recordings...and hell for my stealth tapes, I can always buy a copy on ebay  ;D

Con-your only archival copy of your tape will be on whatever you put it onto from the PC...CDR in most cases...and with production quality of CDRs, you have varying lives of the masters.  This vs. DAT tapes, which I have not yet had a problem with crapping out, yet I have had a problem with CDRs flaking away

I second this.  Get good CDR's.
Tickets are dead to me.  Except the ones I have, don't have, and lost.  Not to mention the ones you have, don't have, and lost.   And the ones that other dude has, doesn't have, and lost.  Let me know if you need some tickets, I'm happy to oblige.

Even "good" CDRs are unproven, however - they just haven't been around that long.  That said, it's still a good recommendation: get good CDRs!

wonder if DVD's are proven more "reliable"???

i have that many backups cause i like having an original as the dat(48k), and also a flac'd copy tracked, and an audio copy tracked so i dont have to convert flacs>wavs and vice versa, plus, i spin all of my audios for a good buddy usually, so i have that option too, and hes saved my ass w/ copies more than a couple times!!!

basically, im an anal obsessive geek about having a copy being "lost";-);-)

I do the same thing.  As soon as I transfer it to the PC from the NJB3, I make a FLAC... then I track it, and normalize (if needed), and make an audio copy, which I then copy again for personal use, so I don't scratch the master audio.

I don't know if I would call it anal, just that we love our hobby, and if we lose our recordings, for whatever reason, what's the point?

so i should (when i do get some thing to tape with) i should put it in flac and not SHN?

THANKS

I think FLAC compresses more, so your file sizes will be smaller.  I think that is the main advantage of FLAC over SHN.

Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

Oh, and, I think the NJB3 is the shiznitz.  I love it.

I think for 16/44 they're pretty much the same.  Even if FLAC compresses more, I don't think it's a huge difference.

But the main advantage is that it'll compress 24 bit files.

i store all my stuff on dvd-r...so far so good.

one con...people always ask me what it is.

"is that a md of some sort?"  "no"
"are you recording to cd?" "no"
"ever hear of DAT?" "yes, but this is the same quality"
"but its an mp3 player?" "yeah, that too"

also, no need to do md5's, it can verify as its going along, and can delete input files

you can split flac's with cdwav now.  which is rather nice.

cdwav can also save a wav as a flac file now, which is nice...now all it needs to do is make a ffp for the flacs at the same time and i'd be a very happy camper.
