What's the best way to clean/defunk cables? My XLRs absolutely reek of cigarette smoke.

i spray some windex into a paper towel and run it down the length, then rinse with water in the same fashion.

febreeze... all the way...
edit: and yes contact cleaner works well, i also have used rubbing alcohol to clean the contacts as well..

Is there anything I should avoid putting on the cables?

gasoline, nail polish remover, acetone and anything else that will desolve the protective layer.
i echo others here. Radio Shack sells cheap $ contact cleaner sprays. just undo the xlrs and give it a good spray and wipe it down.
