Title: Cable separation from mics to pre-amp?
Post by: balou2 on April 08, 2006, 10:33:31 PM
Yeh...I'm on a cable learning quest.  I've seen SOME discussion on this, but nothing concrete.  Maybe ToddR or Chris can chime in.

When running high end cables, is there any benefit to separating the cables in the run (opposed to allowing them to touch)?  I would think the better the cable, and insulation, the less EMI would be present, but I don't have the tools to account for a measureable difference.

The photo below illustrates the separation at terminations for easy plug-in, but I'm wondering about the entire run.

Hey Mike,
I don't know, but I wouldn't be surprised if cable separators made a difference.  I think using them with a vibrapod underneath could be a nice tweak for your on stage set up.  I've found isolation practices make a big impact around live music stages.  Vibration could likely be controlled more easily with the cables not touching each other.  As for the EMI/RFI issue, maybe an electrical engineer could comment.

ive ALWAYS ran my silver cables 'touching' and coiled and have never noticed any audible problems

i think shielding/insulation on good cables takes care of that

have you ever seen an XLR snake? craziness in a nutshell, most of the cables are touching at some point
