cheapest solid state recorder available?
« on: February 28, 2009, 10:52:56 PM »
i have an r-9 that i am very happy with.  i am going to sxsw and want to record shows off a fm receiver while i am out in the field with the r-9.  i need another unit, but don't want to spend $330.  anything cheap ($100-$150) out there that records line level on sdhc or compact flash?  would like to use 8g hds so i can record for 8+ hrs.  thx in advance.

If youre gonna have access to AC power, or extra batts for the unit, your cheapest bet would probably be a JB3. Otherwise, Id go for a iRiver (typically found for $125 give or take). You can pick up a High capacity Batt on ebay for about $15-$20 shipped and you should be good to go with 20 gb of HD space, and easily 8hrs of battery power...

The JB3 and iRiver use a small hard disc, so they're really not "solid state."

If you like the Edirol R-09 (not the newer R-09HR), you can find them on
eBay and Craigslist for about $100.  Here's one example I see tonight

After the festival, you can sell it and get your money back.

If you're in the Austin area, I have a JB3 I can lend you while you're at swsx. i know its not solid state but its what I have to offer.  ;D

...but both can be CF modded at marginal cost, if you buy the adapter from Hong Kong and devote 30 minutes for some DIY.

That said, refurbs of Zoom H2 is retailing for $110-130 these days, that even beats the Galaxy misfit:
