Topic: Good built in A to D?

I just picked up a Nbox+ and am running it into a pmd671.  I usually use this deck as a bit bucket in my other rig (ak40>lc3>km100>v2>mme>671).  I am wondering if there is another recorder that has a better A to D conversion built into the machine.  I think the most common response might be the SD 702/722.  With just picking up the nbox and a pair of MK4s this recorder is not in the price range at the moment.  Any suggestions, or should I just keep things as it is??

I expect the 671 is good, especially since you are running line-in.  A lot of people with NBoxes go for something like an R09/R09HR which has a pretty good A/D.  I'm not saying it's better than the 671, I honestly don't know either way, but the R09's are pretty good for the price.

I can't comment on the 671 or R09 since I haven't owned them, but I owned and ran both the 702 and 722, and I think I prefer the A/D stage on the Sony D50 I have better than the SD boxes.

The 702/722 is obviously great for being bomb-proof and being a very good all in one choice, but if you've already got an nbox, I don't think the line-in/AD of the 7xx is necessarily the be all and end all.

I never did comps of the AD of the D50 vs the 7xx since I generally ran V3 digi> D50 and V3 analog> 7xx, so my comps are of the 7xx AD vs the V3 AD.  Too bad, wish I had done that at the time...

Anyway, I'm now running PSP2>D50 line-in as one of my main rig configurations and like it quite a bit.  If you don't think you're satisfied with the 671 run line-in, you might consider the Sony D50, or the new Sony M10 or the R09HR for that matter.  Those will also make for a nice low-profile rig as well.

thats very good advice, I have just run the nbox with the 671 one time so far, and I loved it...i need to run more to say for sure, but I am just curious to others opionions of other built in A/D's and over all recording machines out there.

The A/D in the Sound Devices is exceptional, one of the best that I have heard, but I am really not impressed at all by the preamplifiers in that machine.  I had a MiniMe for a long time and absolutely loved the box; the A/D in that one was fantastic.

I would stick with what you have until you want to move to a SD box, but I would not run one of those without an external preamplifier.  If size or battery life is an issue, get the D50 and ditch the MiniMe and / or the V2.  What you may want to consider is modifying the 671 through Oade or Busman to improve the line-in stage; that way, you may be able to get rid of the V2 and MiniMe.
