Tascam DR-2D Time Remaining Bug?
« on: March 16, 2012, 08:25:15 AM »
For some reason, my DR-2d thinks it has a 2GB card in it, no matter what size I actually use (tried Sandisk 8GB and 32GB). It keeps listing the "remaing time" at a little over 2hrs (24 bit, 48k). The sandisk cards I am using are supposed to be approved cards. Does anyone else have this issue? Is this the remaining time for the FILE or the card?

I think it's time left in that file. Do you have your file size set at 2 GB in the settings?

I agree, that is because of the 2gb file limit which is the default. If you go into the information menu and scroll to media, it will tell you the size and informaton of your card.

2GB is 2 hours at 48Khz/24bit.

Mine has same problem. I got a 16gb card for my DR2D, and *should* have around 15-16hrs recording, but for some reason when I get around the 5hr mark, the card is full and stops recording. I may have gotten 6 hrs instead of 5 recording continuously!

Yeah, I realize that DOUBLES the capacity on the card since Im essentially recording around 4gb instead of 2gb every 2 hours

I think it's time left in that file.

Exactly.
It's not a bug, but an arguably rather useless feature. The number refers to how long an individual file get be before the automatic track split (which is seamless, by the way).

If you go menu>rec setting>size, you can set the maximum file size. 2GB is the default. If you set it to 1GB, you'll see that the file size in minutes will change accordingly. The same thing happens when you change the "format" and "sample" paramenters.

If you want to know how much storage space is left on the card, you need to go menu>information>card, but you'll have to do the math yourself, unless I'm missing something.

On a related note, this might be helpful: http://www.sounddevices.com/calculator/

Exactly. Every file you record in Dual Mode records 2 files, so you are using twice the amount of space on the card. This is one deck where you will want to use larger cards. I tried mine last night for the first time. Used it as a backup (or 2 backups) for the Allman Bros at the Beacon. I was really impressed and it was really easy to use. I had picked one up since they are very inexpensive right now.

it doesn't affect the time remaining, but definitely update firmware.

it improves battery life significantly
