Strange recording issue with iriver H120
« on: November 10, 2010, 12:02:09 PM »
Please bear with me, this is going to be long........ ;)

During my last two times out recording I have had an issue with my h120.

Here is my setup:  Mics > cables > UA5 > digi out to iriver

I bought new 50' mic cables and used them at a show.  I noticed during setup, that meters on the iriver were bouncing about 1/3 of the way when everything is powered up.  I recorded part of it and listened and there is dead silence.  I recorded sound check, and listened and everything was fine.  I recorded the show, everything was fine.  My assumption was the mic cables because they were the only new component in the chain.

The next week I got a another iriver and brought it along.  I setup the old iriver with the issue, and used 15' cables that I have used a ton of times.  same issue with the meters.  I then switched out the iriver with the new one I got, and the meters were fine.  No bouncing, sound check levels are good.  I recorded the show with the new iriver and everything is fine.

This leads me to believe that this is an issue with the iriver, but what??

Recording come out fine, but the meters bounce when there is no music and the club is quiet.

Any idea's??

My first thought was that 50' are pretty long cables for field taping, maybe the power is struggling to drive the system?
But then I read that short cables give the same result.

When troubleshooting, make sure you run both UA-5 and Iriver on AC/wallwart, to eliminate battery issues.

So one Iriver is fine, the other funky.

Maybe you're running a very old Rockbox build?
Try updating to the latest release and check if it makes a difference.

Try to feed the offending Iriver with analog in. If that works fine, it could be a glitchy/dirty optical jack.
Try using another toslink cable.
If you have a right angle toslink adapter in the chain, remove it while troubleshooting.

Thanks for the comments....that is exactly what I thought to do is reload Rockbox.  It is an old build since I haven't updated it in about two years...
