Tascam iM2: stereo recording for iOS v.4 devices (USB Audio)
« on: November 22, 2011, 05:32:00 PM »
Finally! Tascam's iM2 connects right into the iPhone 4, 4s, iPod Touch 4G connector with a stereo mic pair and USB A/D stage + limiter. $80 USD! Looks like there's an App for it too. No hard specs, though, and 16-bit 44.1 AFAICT.

"There's an app for that"   I work at a college and you would not believe how many kids I talk to say those words.  I had to spend 20 mins explaining why the $2.99 recording app was not suitable to use in our performing arts center when we have a 24 channel Allen and heath mixer with a $900 Tascam CD recorder.  Then he tried to tell me that he could run a sourrond sound system off his phone and we should have surround installed in the theater.  The seem to not realize that the apps and associated stuff are all based on real world gear/instruments etc and are not the replacement for them but a low end simulated verwon designed to be listened to on earbuds.  They are not a replacement for the real deal!

While it may not work great for us here on TS
it is a good back up and could be useful for some.... if it only had an external  mic/line  in
for $79 not horrible...

Great option for travel.  I take my m10 along on trips and try to seek out local talent, but if I had an iPhone this could be an alternative (the m10 isn't big, but it's one more thing to carry/lose/get stolen).  I see this as a gateway drug potentially drawing more people into the hobby.  Start with the iM2>iPhone, realize for a few hundred more you can move up to a Church Audio>m10 type rig, and then for a few THOUSAND more... you know how the story ends.

Wait, there's an end to this?  I thought gear-buying was a never-ending addiction lifestyle choice. :P
