Edirol R1 Problems
« on: February 04, 2006, 09:18:01 AM »
Hi,

I have just recorded 3 shows on the NME Awards tour and all recordings are suffering from distortion of the recording to one degree or another.
I really wanted a good recording of these shows so went out and bought the R1 specifically for the tour to get the best possible recording but it didn't work out.

I was using the R1 with SMC-4 / BMC-6 mics together with a Giant Squid Battery Box connected to the Line-in input.

First night I used the SMC-4 mics which gave distortion so I changed to the BMC-6 mics for the second night.
This gave a slight reduction in the distortion but it is still noticeable on the recording.

The Battery Box does not have Bass Roll-Off

I tried using the Limiter menu setting ON and OFF but this made no difference
I tried using the effects EQ with the settings 32Hz -6dB 64Hz -6dB 125Hz -3dB but this made little difference

Any suggestions to help me get good recordings from the R1?

Do I need to crank up the EQ to -9 say and extend the frequency range it is applied to?
Have I got one of the menu settings wrong?
Will a Bettery Box with Bass Roll-off sort this out?
Will a preamp instead of a Battery Box work better?
Any recommendations for model, technique etc

Mike

assuming this is a bass heavy show it is the mics.  My old set of SP mics used to distort all the time when I was too close to the stacks

I've used the BMC-6 mics on heavier Bass shows than this with a MZ-R70 mini disc recorder and they handled it well enough so I am not convinced that it is the mics, especially as I used two different sets over the three nights...

I was by the sound desk maybe 20m back from the front of the stage so I don't think that I was too close either
