Installing Rockbox on an US iRiver H320?
« on: September 07, 2007, 08:36:19 AM »
I have just bought an iRiver H320 from US with US firmware and want to Rockbox it.
I have previously installed Rockbox on an H320 bought in Europe but unfortunately I damaged that one.
In the manual for Rockbox is written that it does not support US firmware and an non-US firmware should be installed first. However, when I checked the available firmware on www.iriver.com I found out that US devices are not compatible with non-US firmware.
As far as I could find out the only difference between an US H320 and non-US H320 is that the US version support DRM (Digital Rights Management) which I have no intension of using anyway.

My question is: Can I ignore the warning and install non-US firmware (for example version 1.30eu)?
Thank you for your time and for any help you can give.

Kaj

You can perfectly install non-us firmware (and thus Rockbox) on the US model.

HOWEVER there are two things to know:
1) you loose the DRM key _for_ever_ so if you have copy-protected WMA songs, don't upgrade! Even if you go back to a US firmware this will stay that way.
2) the USBOTG will not entirely work because the US model misses 5V supply on the connector (normal USB is OK)

Have fun!

Thanks a lot for your input, I will go ahead and install the international firmware. I don’t really need USBOTG and if I will need it later on I have read that I can modify the H320 so it supports USBOTG (it’s only the 5V power supply that is missing).

Yes, but I know of at least one who tried and broke his player, so I hope you're comfortable with electronics if you ever try to mod it ;)

Hi again, I managed to install Rockbox on my US iRiver H320. First I upgraded the firmware to 1.30eu and then it was no problem installing the newest build of Rockbox. Thanks a lot for the help.
