SP-CMC-2 v. SP-CMC-2A
« on: December 08, 2004, 07:20:20 PM »
Has anyone used , or have knowledge of the 2A's?  I kind of need to have some mics by the new year, and it doesn't look like the 2's will be in stock.  Tech support says:  The elements are custom made for us and are not 831's
but similar. They are our brand of elements.

Should I hold out for the 2's?

Funny, been wondering about these mics. They look identical to the 'AT831s' listed here:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/item/SP-AT831

But they arent the same as my CMC2s.

If they aren't AT831's I'd say away, they are probably SIMILIAR to the SP-CMC-2's (AT831's) but if SP isn't using AT mics here, and their mics it will probably be a little less quality, I'd wait until the 2's come back from SP, they say it should be soon.

They spec out pretty much the same.  There's also the straight AT-831, which obviously has the same specas as these two.  Is there anything Sound Professionals do to thier version that makes it that much better than Audio Technica's?

Here's the specs on the 2a:

and the 2's:

There seems to be some confusion here (which I'll probably add to).

I think that above you've compared what SP call the 2as and AT831s.

The specs for the CMC2s are different:

Quote
Brand SOUND PROFESSIONALS
Description DELUXE AUDIO TECHNICA CARDIOID STEREO MICROPHONES SHOWN WITH CLIP OPTION - TEMPORARILY UNAVAILABLE
Price $139.00
Reviews Number of Reviews: 7
Avg Score (out of 5): 4.9
More Info/Add to Cart View
Specifications Frequency Response 40-20,000 Hz
Signal To Noise Ratio 65dB
Open Circuit Sensitivity -42dB
Maximum Input Sound Level 116dB/131dB/141dB
Dynamic Range 87dB/102dB/112dB
Polar Pattern Cardioid
Dimensions .4 X .98
Cable Length 48"
Microphone Body Material Painted brass
Features Interchangeable capsules available? No
Windscreens Premium small
Croakie Option Yes
Clip availability Optional standard rotating clips or stationary lapel clips

And they look very different to my CMC2s. To be honest I've no idea what capsules the 2As are based on, anyone?

The 'out of stock' time I stated above of 4-5 weeks was for the CMC4s - it seems all AT mics are out of stock right now.

You asked what SP do to the mics? As far as I'm aware:

-Shorten the leads to 4 ft or so
-Terminate them in a 1/8" mini

Thats about it I think.

Thanks Humbug.  You are correct in that I copied the wrong stuff.

One question that it does bring up though, is why do the CMC-2's get a bigger frequency response?  I would think it would be the same as the 831's, but I guess I'm missing something there.

Sonud Pro tech support said this about the 2's: The elements are custom made for us and are not 831's
but similar. They are our brand of elements.

I'm new to this board and new to taping, but I've been in the trading community for a while.

I decided to go with the CMC-2As. In talking with Chris at SoundPros, it sounded like the CMC-2As are very close to the AT831s, but they were able to make them a little bit cheap then using AT831s. Maybe he is biased, but he also said that everyone at SP feels they function just a SLIGHT bit better than the AT831s.

For me, being a "newbie" taper, I'll give them a shot.

How do you like the CMC-2? Got any tapes uploaded to the archive I could check out?

topping this cause i've got a tape spreading now using the sp-cmc-2a:

http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=38329.0

if anyone wants to hear a clip:

Right click, Save As...

Victor Wooten - Norwegian Wood, 3.17.05

this was in a "ballroom", probably 15-20 foot ceilings, 950 person capacity i think... and they has some weird like dust stuff sprayed on the ceiling, i'm assuming to cut down on echo.
