cleaning my d8...
« on: February 25, 2004, 03:14:52 AM »
I know I have to get one of those cleaning tapes. I've never run one through my D8 and I've recorded about 30 hours with it. After my last show, in December, I noticed some digi-blips throughout the recording when played back through the D8 itself...
Should I be able to see that the heads need cleaning? Ras Michael is on Friday and I don't think we're gonna be able to get a cleaning tape in time on my budget...

my roommate said that at school they clean heads with rubbing alcohol and a q-tip.  he suggested i do the same to clean the heads on my mini dv cam.  i just looked at him funny and told him i didn't trust it and that i'd just get a head cleaner.  well the head cleaner came today and i never tried the rubbing alcohol idea...but it seems like it might work.  I know i've cleaned off some points on motherboards with rubbing alcohol before.

heh, that probably didn't help at all.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

Thers a D7/D8 resource page here:
http://www.rockpark.com/d7/
it didnt load for me. It tells how to take it apart and clean it from the inside. Ive never doen it. I use a cleaning tape.

Leonard's tips for cleaning and lots of other stuff:
http://www.sonicstudios.com/tips.htm#top

But on my big decks I use alcohol. and chamois tips, NOT Qtips. You also need the 99% pure alochol., not the cheap 70% stuff. Its all about evaporation here. The crud sticks to the chamois, the alcohol evaporates real quick and the heads are clean. Do the transports too and anything the tape touches. The rubber rollers could dry rot so use rubber cleaner for those. Rdaio Shack has a little kit for ~$5, a bottle of the good alcohol and some foam tip cleaners (so globs of cotton arent in your deck)
Hope this helps.

DO NOT use a Q-tip Armen!

Use only 100% denatured alcohol and a LINT FREE cloth for cleaning.

I have followed the directions on the link above and dismantled mine, and several of my friends' D8's and cleaned them this way. It is very easy to do Armen, just follow the directions. Go for it!

Okay, cool! This would solve my digifarting problem like a cleaning tape would, yeah?

If dirty heads are the issue causing the dropouts, then yes.

Of course. Cleaned with a lint-free cloth and completely denatured alcohol. Couldn't get the big screws on the side of the cassette cage open but I got to the drum ok.
