Sony MZ-R70 vs. iRiver H120 + Rockbox
« on: January 17, 2006, 02:21:06 PM »
hello out there xD
this saturday the heavy metal show with "eisregen" starts and i am going to try for a stealth tape.
my new mics, "core sound low cost binaurals /w low sensivity option".
since i had no opportunity i have no experience with the mics, this concert will be the first.
as you know (the core sound website says so) these mics where especially made for sony's mz-r70 to avoid distortion.
len moskovit said to me via email, that these mics were created to put them directly into the mic-in.

BUT

some months ago i updated my iriver h120 with the rockbox firmware, which is able to record in wave (what is the profit of the "quality" option in the recording setup!? 44.1 is chosen already and it writes to wave!) and there is no need to take some more minidiscs with me.

so, what do you think is the better gear to tape with? are these mics useable with the iriver?
Stealth Setup(s):

NEW ONE:
Microphone Madness HLSC-1 > iRiver H120 + Rockbox > USB > WaveLab > Audio-CD / FLAC

OLD ONE:
Core Sound Low Cost Binaurals + Low Sensivity Option > 9V Battery Box > iRiver H120 + Rockbox > USB > WaveLab > Audio-CD / FLAC

i think that mic is compatible with the iriver  like all the other mics.
try iit to test run in front of your stereo.

ok thanks for reply.

1.) but would you prefer the iriver?
2.) and what record level should i choose? [it is a small and loud hall]
3.) what is the profit of the "quality" option in the recording setup!? 44.1 is chosen already and it writes to wave!

with the iriver you dont have to change discs. and you have on the fly gain control. you have level meters now in rockbox so don't let run to hot to the right. i think adc gain should be zero wich is equal to 'line in' standard. then go from the gain control in the recording screen from there to adjust the levels. if you have too low gain, wich i doubt, you can allways raise adc gain.

the quality option has no funktion, its a left over from the archoros recorder jukebox sourcecode . they didnt't remove it yet from the sourcecode.

There are other differences as well.  The R70 doesn't provide digital upload, and records compressed ATRAC only.  So using the Rockbox firmware is clearly the way to go, IMHO.

yes, the h120 is lossless.
but the mz-r70 only supports the "standard minidisc recording", is this already an atrac compression?

Yes, it is, I believe ATRAC4.  HiMD does lossless PCM.

According to the MiniDisco folks the best you can do in PCM is about 28 minutes....that's alot of disc swapping.  Thumbs up to iRiver+Rockbox.  I've been using Shap MDs for a few years and just switched since the glitches have been worked out on the H1XXs.

HiMD discs can store 94 minutes of PCM, 7h 55m of SP.

you can record 1 hour and 34 minutes (lossless linear recording) on a hi-md with a 1gb minidisc.on lossy format you can get like 7 hours.stay away from that though.
