so is there no way to watch a wide screen dvd in FULL screen wide screen?
i was under the impression that a wide screen dvd would fill a wide screen tv
no???
if yes then what am i doing wrong
thanks

It depends on the aspect ratio of the DVD. Certain aspect ratios will still leave some black bars on the top and bottom of the screen. Ever notice in the theater that the shorten the height of the screen for some movies (after the previews), but not for others?

yes i have seen that
thanks at least i know i am not a total dip
as i tried everything i could think of to get no bars at all
-
Generally, 1.85:1 is the only way to get no bars and no stretch.
Anything wider (raise the first number) will introduce bars.
-
1.85:1 ratio DVDs will usually take up the entire screen of an HDTV. 2.35/2.4:1 ratios will have black bars at the top and bottom. The only way to never see those bars is to only play anamorphic transfers on a projector. ;)

i wonder if dvds tell the ratio on the case
i will have to look at the couple i got at home

I think many, if not all, do. At least, I remember most of mine stating the aspect ratio.

Most do.
