If you're interested in the Nbob solution, you'd better act quick! It sounds like the cables are going to go the way of the Tinybox:

That is unfortunate.  By all accounts the Nbob cables are great.  I have certainly liked his other products which are first rate.  I don't have the need, but will N-Box work with KCY cables?  I use Tiny Box, so I haven't tracked how N-Box actually works and cable compatibility.

Yes, Nick can build a KCY nbox.

You might want to check on this. I talked to Nick a while back when I was running MK41 > KCY clone > lemosax. I inquired about an Nbox with the hopes that I could switch between the lemosax and Nbox. He said that the circuitry is different. He would have to irreversibly modify the KCY cable so that it wouldn't work with the lemosax or the Schoeps preamps anymore.

Things might have changed since then, but I'm pretty sure it's the same situation. With the KCY cable, I think I read somewhere that the magic happens in that little box on the cable, whereas with the Nbox, all the magic happens in the preamp. I could be wrong, so definitely sort it out before you start putting together the rig.

^ The nbox I just sold to caymanreview has a five pin binder input on it and directly accepts the KCY cable or the nbobs.  As far as I'm aware, this was the second nbox Nick make with a binder input on it.  Of course, my nbob cable is directly compatible with the schoepsVMS5U or a VMS02ib preamps.  Since the VMS's I currently have use XLR inputs (VMS32UB and VMS52UB), I have a pair of PFA adapters that go between the 5pin binder on my cables and the XLRs on the preamps.

Of course, the Lemo connector isn't the same connector as a binder, so those aren't directly interchangeable.  I suppose it's possible that an adapter cable could be made with a Lemo on one end and the binder on the other, but if Nicky said that the nbobs/KCY isn't compatible with a lemosax maybe there's something else going on that prevents that compatibility.

Thanks for the clarification Steve! I stand corrected.

The Lemosax I had was equipped with a KCY input as well as the Lemo connectors. It accepted the KCY binder connector. This was the same unit Bean had a while back.

Very cool that Nick can make the Nbox compatible with the KCY and Nbobs that can be used with the Schoeps preamps! There's never been a better time to get into taping with all this high-quality gear!

Thanks to bombdiggity and all the other members about their ideas for setups.  I think I will end up going with the Schoeps CCM set-up.  I appreciate members explaining the advantages of the nBox and Tiny Box units.

So this would be OK do you think bombdiggity?

Schoepps CCM41 > Adapter cable K 5 LU CCM (from Lemo to XLR-3M output connectors) > Roland R-26 XLR input

Are side addressed mics preferred for concert stealthing? Or just the regular ones?

The Schoeps CCM range really looks great to me.

I have another concert coming up in a few weeks which I'm going to tape.  I'll use my current beginner's rig for that one though.  Audio Technica AT943 microphones, Sony M10 and a 12 Volt battery box (no settings on the box)

I would get MK41 caps, KCY cable and Naiant PFA's instead of the ccm41's!!  Much cheaper and you could eventually add extra caps.  The ccm41 setup doesn't have removable caps.

2 pages and no one has mentioned DPA 402x yet.

I stealth with DPA 4023s and a SD 722. I've never compared the 722 against any other all in one solutions, but I believe it does sound better than my smaller stealth setup Sonosax>Sony m10. I only use the smaller setup when I think it will be hard to get the 722 past security.

^ Nice, too, that you can get the active cables with swappable caps these days.  I think they are virtually the same size as the compacts...

Thanks for everyone's replies.  There's tonnes of info and I appreciate it.

How awesome the SD722 would be to use.  Is it very hard to get it past security would you say?  It looks like a pretty awesome device.

I would be using the Sony M11, it supplies 5-7-9 volts to the mic or line in via settings.
No more battery box.

Really tough to beat mk41>nbob>nbox>m10...and for a hundred bucks and change you can add a PFA to run into any p48 recorder. I think I paid around 2700 for the whole setup new, that can't be beat. And sounds as good as anything I've run. Add more caps if you want, but the 41s are super versatile.
