Title: Naiant AKG Active cable length
Post by: JimmieC on April 08, 2013, 03:01:26 PM
What are most people ordering for the Naiant AKG Active cable length?

My understanding is the the capsule connects to the coupling (no cable) and then the PFA (3') connects the coupling to pre-amp.  Is this correct?  If so then I could use the 3' PFA for stealth (never have) and order the following options for stand mount?:

1)  a longer PFA.
2)  3' AKG adaptor cable with 9' 6-pin mini-XLR extension
3)  12' AKG adaptor cable (dual Binder to 6-pin mini-XLR)

Not really.  You are correct that the capsule screws directly onto the coupling, but then, however, you can order cabling on the PFA however long you want (for a nominal fee /ft of extra cable).  I think 3' is just included in the base price for the PFA.  I personally have no intention to ever stealth so just got the PFAs with 12' of cable.  I briefly discussed using different cable lengths and adapters with Jon, but it turns out the Binders are pretty expensive so the cost kind of adds up when adding more into the equation.

Does the PFA attach to the coupling or does the coupling come with cabling?

The PFA is built into the XLR connector then there is XX' of wire and the Binder connector that attaches to the Naiant AKG Active coupling.

OK thanks and sounds good.  I think I will try to get mine 15' too.

correct me if I am wrong but with the pfa you could use any xlr to extend them
the 6 pin mini xlr is where you can go from l/r into one cable as the extension
so if i am reading and understanding it right then you are mixing together two different options

I got both the PFAs  (two separate binder > XLR cables about two feet long each) and the 4ft long binder terminated set of two cables which terminate in a single 6 pin minixlr (ta6f) for running straight into Tinybox.

I use the PFAs when I just want to run a single mic on stage or want to run a long distance or get gigantic split or run without Tinybox.

I had Ted make me a 6pin miniXLR extension to run the actives on a stand but not make the cables themselves ridiculously long. I recommend this if you ever want to go undercover and have a Tinybox. Or get Jon to make a universal 6pon extension.

Btw, that same cable gives me another 12' with my Schoeps/kcy cables if I need it on my other Tinybox (8v). Same pinout just different voltage and adapter cables.

right
so the op is looking at 2 different things
option 1
option 2 and 3

between 2 and 3 i did 2

Thanks for your guys responses.  I sent an email, hopefully an order, for:

Couplings
3' AKG adapter
9' 6-pin mini-XLR extension
PFA 3'

If I understand the your guys responds, I should be able to run the following configurations with this order:

1)  ck61>coupler>AKG adapter>Tinybox (future order) - Would be ~3' long configuration.
2)  ck61>coupler>AKG adapter>PFA>Lunatec preamp - Would be ~6' long configuration.
3)  ck61>coupler>AKG adapter>XLR extension>PFA>Lunatec preamp - Would be ~15 long configuration.

Which is one of the options Jon had posted in his thread.  I'm not sure why I could not wrap my mind around it till now.

I got a tiny box (no PFAs) and chose option 2 as well.

Jimmy

EDIT - actually i don't see why you couldn't pass the pfa current through the 6 pin mini and in turn do what you listed above
you still would have the option of going 12 feet with the tb based on the lsit of cables you posted

Edit: above confusion was figured out while I was writing, nevermind.

I believe you can do the dual PFA > single 6 pin mini xlr input.

So his caps x2 > coupler x2 > Binders x2 (I think what means by "adapters") > single 6 pin mini xlr (3') > tinybox or PFA with similar 6 pin input (3').

Then just have a single 6 pin mini xlr extension cable if you want to run longer with the PFAs.

I would personally go with #3
