hello. i'm going to start a podcasting business (or sort of ...) and
i'm now wondering what do i need to start. the first assignment would
be a set of interview in the field (open air and standard rooms), and
after few days of browsing the web and some googling, i believe i may
need a microphone, a portable digital recorder, a mixer (?) if i'm
going to use two mics when sitting with the guest around a table. i'll
then use the pc to do the edits of the sound recorded. finally the
question for you experts: what kind of gear to buy, given a budget of
$750-1000? many thanks in advance for your advice and apologize for
such a newbie question.

i would suggest that you begin reading the FAQ about how to purchase low-price point mics and then read up on the computer recording FAQ.
after that you'll have a much better sense of what YOU are trying to create and thereby askign more specific questions.

thank you! will do that. btw, i searched the forum for the "podcasting" word but i just got one post. i also gave a look at the various introductory notes and browsed a couple of interesting posts about the comparision between the r1 and the microtrack. what i'm hoping is to get a quick "compiled" expert advice, maybe from someone who has already faced the kind of issues i'm facing starting this business. again, thanks for your welcome.

As for FAQs, we don't have a true FAQ, per se. So check out the Where To Begin section's Start Here! forum for a primer. The TS Knowledge Base section's Archive forums are useful for digging up info about specific gear and commonly asked questions or problems. And don't forget the Search feature! Great way to dig up all sorts of info on whatever topic or piece of gear strikes your fancy.
All this to say, it takes some effort on the part of newbies to learn and establish a frame of reference. Then...ask away, we'll do our best to help out.

an inexpensive lapel mic might be a good way to go for wiring up yourself and posibly your guest. stereo micing isnt much of a concern with speech, from what i have been told, so the only reason for 2 mics would be, like you said, more than one interviewie (is that even a word).
most lapel mics are battery powered so that saves some time and money. i would suggest a jb3 b/c of the firewire ability... get it on to your computer faster for the casting. there are smaller units... if you are exclusive to interviewing and not music, the iriver records in mp3 format... but i dont know what the transfer ability is.
i think you could do this w/o a mixer and probably only need about 300-500 worth of gear.
