Looking for recommendations on mic setup
« on: August 27, 2008, 11:40:31 AM »
Hi all -

I'll be taping Matt Nathanson at the Berklee Center for Performing Arts, and was looking for some recommendations for mic setup/placement.  I'll be sitting in the Mezzanine, Row A, so right on the rail of the balcony.  Venue looks like this:

http://www.berklee.edu/facilities/images/bpc2.jpg

I think I have the six seats, 3 on either side of that "hump" in the middle, so pretty close to direct center.

My current plan is:

AKG 481's into Busman modded Korg MR1000, DIN (or similar), clamped to the rail, plus
AKG 460s + AKG active cables + CK2's (omni) into MixPre (shure rebranded) into Korg MR1 dangling down, spaced AB as far apart as I can

My options are to use hypers on the 480 bodies (483's) and to use hypers or cards on the 460's (CK1's or CK3's).  I'm thinking the cards are a better option for the 480's, since there should be little crowd noise (i.e., it's a concert hall instead of a bar), and the omnis on the 460's will make up for any bass loss.  This will be my first try at 4 channel, and I'm crossing my fingers it could be my best pull ever so I'm trying to put extra thoguht into this one.

Any recommendations on changes to the caps, or suggestions on placing the omnis?  Thanks in advance!!'

Mike

AKG 461's / 463's OR Senn MKH 8040's > MR1000 (Busman mod) or Shure FP24 (aka MixPre) > MR1 (open)
Coresounds Binaurals > CChurch 9100 > MR1 OR AKG CK1x/2x/3x > Deneke P20 > MR1 (low profile)

Damn
nice venue!

sounds like you already got a plan...

I'd just run the Omnis hanging down from the balcony just a bit
that would be awesome!
and I'm a sucker for ORTF
so with the smallness of the venue if you're gonna run a second set second I'd clamp to the rail possibly with a extension arm outward.
an ORTF set
personally I am not a fan of the hyper sound
whatever you do It will sound great!

good luck n
have fun!
