you have two realistic choices, 0 and -6, and many people pick either (the V2 outputs overload at +27dbu, or 1dbu greater than the max in of the 7 series units). I personally never worried about achieving "unity gain" when I had one and an external preamp, it was "what do I need to set so that it clips [on the SD] just before it overloads [on the preamp]" so that I would know to keep it under that overload point on the preamp gain.

I always ran my v2/v3 at +20db and used the 722 for the rest of the gain!

unless you have to (cause of a fixed gain preamp like the oade boxes), it doesn't make any sense to adjust your recorder when your preamp has a perfectly good knob and the entire point of it is gain and preferred coloration. Especially when you consider that the preamp could overload and force you to dicker with that in a pinch where as if you adjusted the preamp to start with, you already know it's calibrated to your recorder so you won't ever have to adjust the 702...

I ran the V2/V3 with the gain at +20 and trimmed the rest (all on the V2/V3)
