Marantz PMD-671 (24/96 capabilities)
« on: November 29, 2004, 04:23:38 PM »
I didn't see anything on this when I searched the forum....

The PMD-671 will supposedly be a PMD-670 with 24/96 capabilities. Not much info out there though. The only thing I could find was in German.

http://www.nf-concept.de/news.php?newsfid=11&newsid=14&sfid=&sid=1&sfinc=news_out&mfid=&mid=

If they can keep this under $1k (PMD-670 is $699), I could see this competing with the FR-2 and 722. Run this behind a V3/Mini-Me/modSBM-1 and it would be nice.

Using an online translator:

Quote
As a successor of the PMD670 Marantz presented the recorder PMD 671 for clay/tone master conference.
Like its predecessor the PMD 671 has adjustable
Samplingfrequenzen, USB connections and removable covers over the main control panel
and medium drive assembly, integrates, which were wished by users. Was added the admission with 24Bit/96 kHz and Mp3 compression of 384kbit/s. The quality of the MP3 files was thus again improved. The editing software PMD Edit permits the comfortable further processing at the PC.
Out of the game … for now?

Depends on the price. If its sub $1k, it might be for me.  For those who already have pre-amps and A/D they like it might be too.

Still no hard drive though.

I don't want to have a deck of flash cards for festivals.

Has anyone here used the 670?  If so, how does the front end sound?

If it's under $1k and I can work it out with a retailer here, I'd be willing to guinea pig this one. 8 GB of CF media (SanDisk Type II, for example) is available for under $700 now. For 2 channels of 24/96, you don't need the ridiculously fast media like you would for a digital SLR camera.

you can get 4GB micro drive cards for $178. For non-stealthing, I would love to run MK4 > SX-M2 > PMD-671 (24/96)

Actually I like this.  I wouldn't mind to see some sort of HD mod, but if flash can drop low enough it'd be great.  Hell, no moving parts could be the best thing for taping. ;)

I was very close to buying a PMD670 at one point, so I may end up with one of these, depending on the price...

I had found 1 UK retailer with a posted price, but I'm hoping the price was a joke/incorrect:
9999.99pounds

I agree, I think once flash catches up to our needs, it will be better than harddrives.  and in my mind, it's not a question of "if" higher capacities flash cards will drop in price, it's a matter of when.  prices are constantly dropping, and capacities are constantly increasing...

2 hours on 4 gigs.  I'd probably expect it to be a little more than the 16/48 one, but not much.  Maybe $100 more?  Probably at half the cost of the FR-2 (plus half the size and the same features, go figure).

I've seen the 670 in person and it's great.  It's basically a DAP1 without the tape.

you mean 24/48?

you should be able to get 125 min at 24/44 for 2GB... so i think it would be safe to say you can get 2.5-3 hours at 24/48 on a 4GB card.

You can get more than 2.5-3 hours. As posted before 24/96 stereo = about 2 GB/hour. 48 kHz is half the data rate of 96 kHz, so you'd get twice the amount of recording time, or about 4 hours.

If that's true, there's some bad news on that page. It maxes out at 24/48 via the digital input. I guess the 24/96 is only via the analog ins.

I don't get the impression that it's a typo, because it written twice on that page.

In any case, I've emailed (gotten a repsonse) from a "Tech Support Supervisor" at Marantz.  My first email was if this product was ever actually going to come out, because there was very little info on the web about it...

on Feb 8, I got this:

Quote
Hi Jason,
The PMD671 will be a reality.  I don't have a date of release yet,
but keep checking the website.  Specs will be on the site when the unit is
closer to release.

Bill Loulousis
Tech Support Supervisor

(866) 405-2154 - Toll Free

I just emailed him back directly, asking about the 48kHz limit on the digital input, if it was a typo or not, if I was reading the specs correctly, why Marantz would do that, etc, etc ??? I also asked if he had any more info about when it might be released in the US.   I'll post here if I get any more info about it...

I just got this email in, hopefully this doesn't mean that it's a year or two away.  Although at least the possibillity still exists for 24/96 on the digital in.

HI Jason,
Don't believe any specs you read right now.  Europe has a habit of
releasing very preliminary, very incorrect specifications.

Do you think he's talking about the Eurpean division of their company, or does all of Europe have a habit of releasing preliminary specs?  ;D

Well that looks like a denial of the specs to me, so hopefully he means something like "yeah europe published something from 6 months ago and they're wrong."  In any case, this is probably good news. ;D
