Topic: Great tape gone bad! Anyone know what this noise is?

So I ran my rig last night (DPA4061s > MPS6020 > SBM1 (ToddModd, SPDIF out) > MicroTracker@ 16/44.1) on the front right stack and what I thought would be a very nice tape came out with a major problem.  It has this layer of what sounds like interference over the whole thing!  I am really uncertain what introduced this into the recording and would like to hopefully iron out the bugs and possibly see if I can salvage this tape using any sort of restoration or cleaning plugins or utilities.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm pretty discouraged this morning and kinda pissed as this is the 2nd time i have blown taping Clutch.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you are going to get rid of that with a plug in.

The distortion seems to follow the volume - were you running line in?  SBM-1 was on what volume level?  Good battery in the 6020?  If you set it up right now at home does it have that distortion?

1) I ran SPDIF in.
2) SBM1 was about 6.5.
3) 6020 - BRAND new battery, just put it in last night.
4) Haven't tried, just had to time to check out the recording, at work now.

I'm just thinking since the distortion gets louder when the music gets louder the problem is somewhere in the gain stages.  I'm not sure about the MT but is the spdif in just taking whatever level is present?

Are you running the MT2496 with the same battery that is powering the sbm1 or MPS6020?  There are some issues when running a MT2496 and a Sonosax off the same battery when running a voltage regulator..  it creates an "interference"::noise:: type sound all through the recording process..

Yes Line-In on the SBM1.  If it is the SBM1, that would sort of be a relief cause I can have Todd fix it, HOWEVER, still shitty overall.  The MT takes the digital signal, so yeah whatever level is present.

I would try running the digi-out to your JB3 or another digital recording device to see if the noise is still there. If so the problem is probably with the SBM1.

Then you could also try running the MPS straight into the Microtrack, if there is still noise maybe the problem is with the mics or MPS.

That's the plan for this weekend.  This is the first time this has done this so I hope it wasn't just a fluke thing, I hope it is something I can actually re-create.

Well I was unable to recreate it....tried everythign I could think of without luck.  I guess tonight's Queens of the Stone Age show will be my next test.
