R09 windscreen ideas ?
« on: July 23, 2006, 12:23:55 PM »
hi everyone...

i've been using the r09 with its internal mics a fair bit...i like the portability and speed, and they in fact sound quite good. however...i find that i'm getting a lot of wind noise and so have been trying to figure out how to devise some kind of a windscreen...has anyone else tried this ? any tips or ideas ?

cheers...

A furry knit hat works  ;D

You could cut a custom one out of a block of foam but I am unsure where to find the right kind to insure that it wont dull the high end.  Whats the best dead rat material?

I have an R-09 as well...and I had wind problems recording a thunder storm. I am going to try panty hose material...I have an AT825 and a Rycote Baby Ball Gag w/ fuzzy thing, so I can record in really windy situations, but I think the panty hose (like the sock-length variety) might fix the problem without muffling the sound.

You were recording a thunder storm or during a thunder storm? Seems like a stupid question, though I'm sure folks do record thunder storms on occasion...

I was recording a thunderstorm. I have recorded all the Great Lakes, Niagara Falls, the Atlantic Ocean, a babbling brook, birds, bullfrogs, peepers, leaves falling, wind whistling, geese honking ... what's so odd about a thunderstorm? Actually, I recorded most of that stuff using a Roland VS-1680 with a battery pack and a camper's foldout table & AT825 microphone...now with the R-09, I keep it in a padded  Promaster digital camera case on my belt and I'm ready to catch anything...recorded a train whizzing by at ~8 feet away...holy $&!t that had some low end. And yes, I record music also.

Nothing at all...makes more sense than recording some of the stuff I tape.

So... anymore windscreen ideas? And whereabouts would one find a "custom deadrat furry cover", besides somewhere in my crawlspace...? Anyone have any low-down on material acoustics? If I put a shag fleece bandana on my R-09, will it make that big of a difference in the high's?

If you're looking to buy a dead rat, I highly recommend DarkStarJedi (Keith)...

Silk has been recommended by Douglas Spotted Eagle as a wind screen for small mics. I bought some silk at a Fashion Bug and made a pop filter with it. The thing about silk is that it reduces the rustling noise that you get by using the foam wind screens. I might have to drape some silk over the R-09 mics and fix it in place by using a rubberband...
