Topic: Powering SP-CMC-8 mics on an Edirol R-09

Hello guys,
I think I am a bit confused here.
Initially I was under impression that built-in Edirol R-09's power was sufficient to drive CMC-8s. However, I am noticing that I can only get it to record if the recording level is set to two clicks from the zero-point (on an high sensitivity setting). Is this expected or something is wrong with my mics?
I just want to know this sure before I go ahead and spend another $50 for a battery box.
