card mic configuration - setup question
« on: March 22, 2007, 11:39:00 AM »
Hey, I'm not keen on dragging a stand around and I've never been a hat-wearing person.  So for the last two years I've been wearing my mics on my shoulders.  AT853 cards.  I've tried to set them up as close to DINA as possible.  But my question is, is this a good way to do it (sonically speaking)?  I know typically a DINA setup is on a bar with nothing in between the capsules, but in my case my head is in the middle.  I have my mics positioned on my shoulders right at my neck on either side.  Here's a crappy overhead text representation:

                                      Head
                                        ---
                                       /    \
          at853 card -> \\  |      |  // <- at853 card
                                       \    /
                                        ---

I have the spacing and angle for DINA, but is my head messing things up?

I used to run omnis in a similar fashion, just pointing straight ahead and farther apart on my shoulders (at the edge of my shoulder where your arm attaches).  So when I switched to cards I kept them on my shoulders, but as close to DINA as I could.

What's the best way (sound quality wise) for someone who is wearing their mics to configure them?  Would omnis or hypers be better for someone who doesn't have a stand or wear hats?

Was just looking for some opinions and recommendations from the experts here.  Thanks, Bob.

I pretty much do the same thing with the same mics

I've been happy with the results, and I'm not sure how much better it would sound to put significant effort into ensuring that they were at a perfect angle, etc.  I still get decent stereo separation, and if I'm FOB and a show has stereo panning, it carries over

With omnis you're gonna get to listen to the people behind you as well

hypers I think are only appropriate for certain situations

I have no clue as to whether this setup works best, however I have some success with collar-mounting AT853s.

Edit: I use hypers in the larger rooms where I am some distance from the Stage. My Black Crowes 3-19-2006 tape is a good example of this.

Edit 2: Pic and some notes deleted. pm me if info required.
