ughh.... 722 firewire issues
« on: May 12, 2007, 07:55:14 PM »
I'm trying to get my 722 to sync up with my home computer, but for some reason it won't.

I have tried just about everything that I can think of.  The most frustrating thing is I can hear my computer beeping letting me know it recognizes a firewire plug-in, but the 722 never tries to sync up.

I did a search, but I could not find anything.

Any hints from the 722/744 owners.

Any help would be greatly welcomed!

Thanks

I thought you actually had to tape something to have files to transfer  ;)   ;D

Good luck on your fix, I'm having computer issues myself.  Call Martin, he can probably help you out.

Oh, and I thought you were going to the crawfish boil?

Oh, and I thought you were going to the crawfish boil?

Talked my way out of that since I'm having so much trouble with the computer right now.

I hear ya on the lack of getting out recently.  This is something that Jeff pulled a couple weeks ago

You may have already tried this but... with the 722 turned off, connect it to the PC and then power it up.

I truly believe my 722 has a personality of its own.  Woke up this morning after leaving the 722 and the computer turned off and it sync'd up flawlessly.  Thanks to fozzy and monochromic for the suggestions.

+T for the advice!

Back when I used a PC, I had intermittent connection problems that were seemingly impossible to pin down. Someone suggested I replace my budget FW card for something of higher quality. Once I did that, the 722 connected every time.
Out of the game … for now?

I'll probably try that now that you mentioned it.  It is the std FW port that with the desktop.  Can't hurt to upgrade anyway.  Thanks.

I also recommend making a firewire cable that does not pass the power lines from the computer. The reason is that it is possible to put the 6 pin connector in upside down with a bit of force. In that case the 722 (as any other FW unit) will get power backwards into the circuits and they may be burned necessitating a repair.

Easiest way I know of is to buy a 6-pin-to-4-pin connector (as used for many laptops) and a 4-pin-to-6-pin converter piece, found in many computer stores. I have one and keep it in the bag with my 722, additionally allowing me to connect to either type of connection.

Well, I went and upgraded my FW port this morning since I recorded last night.  Same freakin' issue.  I got a 6 pin to 6 pin just for good measure as well.

I wonder if my 722 software has glitch somewhere? I ran an internal test, but everything checks out fine.  I have a email sent in to Sound Devices now so hopefully this will get fixed.  >:( :-\

You can always copy the files from the INHDD to the onboard CF and then go CF> USB> Computer as a workaround until you can get all this worked out.  A little time consuming but it gets er done.

are you connecting more than one external drive (usb card reader, printer with cf/sd/etc. slots, fw/usb hdd)?  it could be a windows issue assigning drive names.
