Title: What config & setup? loud small bar.
Post by: Kindguy on September 12, 2003, 01:30:14 PM
I know questions get posted like this all the time but I could use some advice.

I'm taping Blues Old Stand in a small crappy bar tonight. I can setup wherever I want. There is a poll about 4 feet from the stage that is a good spot & gives a little protection from the drunks. Or I could setup on the stage. I know 4 feet is basically onstage.

Some of the band runs out of a board. & some out of there own amps.

Lots of chatter & talking will be going on as well. I would run the hypers in a room like this usually. But was thinking of running the cards to keep the laughing/screaming girls out of the mix as much as possible.

I ran XY in this situation before & it picked up way too much of the drums & cymbals.

Thinking of doing DIN? Am I too close for it?  Also how high would you run? Head height would be perfect. But I know the room will be so loud & full of drunks.

Any advice would be appreciated. As far as the caps go I'll prob try them both. Just to compare.  (mics are 480's BTW)

could you get a board feed and matrix? run your cards onstage at like 110d 0cm and mix that at 35% and the board at 65%?

I could but from what i remember all vocals & the bass is through the board. Maybe the keyboard is also.

That would make for a weird mix. i have no idea why they run like that.

I would do one of two things:

1.) You can run hypers and point the mics directly at the stacks.

2.) Run cards and try to hit as much of the sound from the stage as possible.

Four feet away seems like too close to me.  Can you move back any to about 20 feet?  It may be easier to use a stereo configuration that way.

Personally, I would probably do option 1 in your situation, but that's me.  Aren't you in Colatown?  What bar is it?

I just got off the phone with them. Vocals only through a small board.

No stacks to point at. Since it's such a small bar they all run out of their own amps.

The bar is 1048 in Montgomery AL.

I could go further back but the crowd noise will be a big issue. The back wall of the bar is approx 25 to 30 ft from the stage.

It's hard to imagine that it will even sound good enough in there to get a descent recording.

mix mics onstage and a sbd feed.  Mix on the fly until it sounds balanced....this will work, I've done it numerous times with good success. it does take a bit of practice though....

I'd go back a little and run hypers in XY, just close the angle a little.  Maybe run at ~9 feet to get a little over the noise.  I'd think that running on stage would be too weird of a mix...

Stop by the shack and get you some adaptors to run RCA>XLR in on the apogee.  Run SBD>500e>D8 and 483>ua5>JB3.  XY at about 70* should do the trick, just get farther back.  Sync after the fact.

I'll second that...

w/ 480's, i would personally run cards, w/ either a DIN or ORTF if that close....i LOVE the 480's in a wider angle like so..... 8)let us know how it turns out!!!!!

I have been recording in a small bar a lot lately, about ten or fifteen back from a mono PA, running reduced angle XY (just to the outside of the stacks), AKG 480>AD20>D8, and I've tried both the cards and hypers. Though the hypers tend to pick up more chatter from behind, I prefer their sound so far because the cards sound a little more boomy and distorted to me at times, maybe the cards are picking up more sound reflections off the walls. I'd definately try them both because even though I prefer one over the other, both are fun to listen to anyways.

Turned out pretty good.

Listening to the 1 set now.

I ran DIN cards about 20 ft from the stage. 2nd set I switched to the Hypers & stayed with the same spot/config. Lots of shots by then.

I think I'm going to like the warm UA-5 a lot. I had a friend talked into selling me his GA brick. But I'm going to hold off on it.

The 63's set sounds a little better. Just a little more detailed/crisp on the high end.

But I'm really happy how good both turned out.  Excited about my new rig.  ;D
