How's the recording quality?

A $50 mic with a $450 recorder? A Church-Audio mic into a used $70 Sharp minidisc recorder would sound far better.

Invest in a Church Audio mic. There will be a huge difference in quality.

All the cheap Sony mics have poor bass response. I started out with the somewhat more expensive ECMMS-907 and was astounded by the huge increase in the quality of my recordings when I stepped up to Sound Professionals mics.

Why not just use the internals on the D50?  They are quite good.  If you are set on using externals you really would be better off getting something like the Church Audio mics or similar.

The internal mics are quite good.

They are *excellent* for ambient recording.  Very detailed and realistic sounding.  Excellent stereo image.  Very low noise too.

For music, I don't like them as much.  They sound a bit "harsh" or "edgy".  OK, but I like several other mics better.

The preamps are just great, with internal or external mics.

What about SPL handling for the internals? Around 125 or maybe even a tad higher?
