Are you talking about standard XLR connector, or something else? The PS-2 is pretty cheap. I got one for a $125.

PS2s vary on price depending on what version you get. I THINK "Rolls" makes one too,and maybe "Korg" I thought I heard somewhere. Now, you can go with a battery powered unit, or one that requires being plugged in. I have heard of both being considered "portable",although when I think of portable,power cords don't pop into my mind.

How does it compare soundwise to, say, PS-2 or UA-5? Any audible difference at all?

I haven't seen many posts about them here, maybe they're unsuitable for taping for some reason???

I have a couple of the ART phantom II boxes. I have used one of them for about a year and the other is new in packaging. I never had a problem using it and it always pulled through like a champ, it's build tough and it's pretty simple, just 2 9 volts and a 24-48 volt switch. i lost the battery cover on the one I use but who uses it anyways? If you want the used one i'd go 35.00 shipped, or 50.00 shipped on the new one. I can send pics if your interested. I just stopped using it when i got my mp-2 a few months ago. Same offer to anyone that wants a cheap phantom box, they work great, not as small as a ps-2 but but as spendy either.

There are two versions of the PS2. One has two mini xlrs for the output, the other has a hardwired 1/8" male mini plug for the output. The latter is about 50.00 more. But with the first, you are still going to have to get a dual mini xlr> (whatever kind of line in you have on your recorder) cable. Your recorder will dictate which one you should get. Denecke also has a new unit, its a pre (like the ad20 and a phantom power) in one unit instead of the two separate boxes.

I found a Rolls model called PB223, but it comes with DC adapter, so making it portable is a DIY project. Cheap though!

OK, there seems to be two varieties of the PB223 as well.
The first one, featured on the official site, has one DC-in jack:

What could the point be of the dual powering? For hot-swapping SLA's, but that could hardly be the intended usage by Rolls?

I really don't know anything about the Rolls products, I just knew they made some inexpensive gear.MMM....what kind of mics are you powering? Just in case you have AT mics, I just noticed that SP is selling th AT power modules for 59.00 each (unless I read this wrong) if this is indeed the case, I'm gonna grab myself a pair for backup.

Well, I haven't held one it my hand yet, I saw it listed on Soundpros website. Basically,it looks like a ps-2/ad-20 in one box. (Phantom and pre)
Pricewise,its about exactly the same as buying both units separately, just getting one unit instead of two. It was listed at 500.00 I believe. You would be better off calling Chris at SP for the exact details. What kind of mics are you going to be using?

not really looking for one, but just curious about it. i ran a ps2>ad20 for a year or so a while ago. i think it sounds better than the ua5 also. i run bsc> r4 currently.

Yeah, I just thought it was kinda interesting. I'm considering picking one up with a set of 943s.
