Hey all,
upgrading the stealth rig, so I figured Id see what some of your preferences were on my two options...
schoeps mk4>sonosax sxm2>sbm1
vs
schoeps mk4>Aeta PSP3>sbm1
so essentially, im just curious if people sway one way or another on the sax vs the psp3 with the schoeps...
Im gonna run my own comparison next week, but am leaning towards the sonosax...
thanks for the input
btw, I have been running mk4>huber>sbm1...the old beaute aint cuttin it anymore...
-
i think you'll need the cmc6's in there too bro ;)
;D
-
I knew someone was going to post that!! obviously it had to be Ian...
serves me right...
mk4>kc5>cmc6 would be more correct...8)
-
fuck that, just run caps and actives
maybe I'll regret posting this when sober

Have you considered the N-Box? Same kinda setup as the JK Labs box - preamp with active cables, removes the mic bodies from the equation. I vaguely recall a post or two being made about it here and the old Oade board. Try searching for Nbox, N-box, N box, etc.
-
Isn't the n-box just a "re-release" of the old reutlehuber(sp) box? same circuit from what I've been told.
-
why not get a V3 instead of a 2 different pieces of equiptment, the v3 smokes with the schoeps IMO :)

Dunno. Likely, I imagine. At any rate, the N-boxes are more available than the old Reutlehuber or whatever boxes (which isn't saying a whole lot! Still difficult to track down).
Kevin - I wouldn't exactly call the V3 + SLA stealthable! (Though I've done it before)
-
my understanding is that the nbox is the same as the huber. Though I do like the sound of the huber, I find it is best at louder shows (rock and roll concerts if you will...) while I am mostly using it for jazz. Because of this, the fixed gain can be an issue.
But agreed, the bodies are a bitch, esspecialy since I am accustomed to not dealiing with them (with the huber). THe ccm4 would be a nice fix to that problem, but that would break my budget.
Gimme a pre/ad a little smaller than the v3, with an internal battery supply, and probably make it black and without as many lights, and Id be down...I guess that is the idea behind the 722, but looks like that aint gonna be out for a while. But a sax and an sbm1 together, though 2 seperate units (which could be fastened together if needbe) are still smaller than something like a v3, now only if they sounded the same.

Scott, I would look for an old PSP-2. I have seen a few around in the last few months. I am sure you can find one. It will fatten your sound a lot of jazz stuff. I definitely am not a fan of the sbm1 with the Schoeps...hell not really with anything. I think it tends to make almost every mike sound like an sbm1. Weird...

Though it is a little big, the vms fits your above criteria... black, not much for lights, stepped gain, internal batt. While the box is bigger, there is no need for bodies. I also see the pre stage at the equivalent of both mentioned.
Dave hit on a good point with the psp2. Same size as the sxm2 & psp3 The transformers would be perfect for a jazz ensemble. I would pref that over both other like sized boxes.
Hope all is well.

Thanks for the info fellas...
I gots to find me a psp2 to borrow and test as well now...
-
gordo - you'll like the psp2, it'll help mask that sbm-1 a little ;-)
seriously, if you're leaning sax over psp3 you should definitely try and find a psp2. The psp3 is okay, especially for stealth where it's internal batteries and size come into play. I think it sounds like a nice Beyer though... blah.
-
BTW Scott...my first rig was with the old vms02ib box. I have LOTS of tapes I can give you if you are considering going that avenue. I would still recommend the psp2 over the vms any day though...

I would agree about the psp-2...if that sketchy ass battery sled/compartment doesn't shit on you. Ask Smiley, Brothers and Kinder about that one. The vms has a FAR better internal battery setup. And probably the batteries won't burn a hole in the unit like they will if you leave them in an EAA overnight, with the unit OFF. Oh, and if you slide some cardboard into the back of the compartment to tighten up the sled's connection to the unit, it will melt down too. Love the sound though. ;D

LemoSax!
From what I hear, if you contact Sonosax they can mod the M2 to accept lemo connectors, and you can ditch the bodies and just run caps>actives>pre. I'm not sure who or if anyone does the active cable mod. That may be a DIY project.

Sonosax SX-M2/LS
I've got a friend who's got one or did have one, and its sweet! I'm looking into getting one right now ;D

Who did the active cable mod?

if you can wait until January, I'll be out of the country for a month and wouldn't mind parting with mine for a few weeks (psp2 that is).
