OK, so I've resigned myself to rerecording from the MD to PC, now, what software do you folks recommend to do the following:
- fade in and out of tracks that didn't start or end smoothly?
- try to soften sibiilant sounds picked up by a microphone recording?
Up to now I've used the WAV editor in the Nero and the EAC applications to do very simple splicing and cutting out digital clicks.

Get CD Wave for splitting tracks, it's free & ridiculously easy to use.
I like CoolEdit Pro a lot for putting fades etc.

You could always get soundforge 6.0 from kaaza.

For that matter, you could get just about any audio editing program on Kazaa or other file sharing / FTP service: Soundforge, Sonic Foundry, Wavelab, Cakewalk, etc.
I use Cool Edit 2000 (don't need Pro to do the stuff I want to do). Cost me something like $60.
I second the CD-Wave recommendation for splitting tracks.

The Waves plugin bundle has a De-esser that is pretty good for softening sibiliance. In fact, the entire Waves plugin bundle is pretty good if you're into that thing.

I second cdwave for tracking, super easy to use and works like a champ
I use a program called goldwave for audio editing, at $40 you can't go wrong and it is just as powerful as the cooledits and the like. The new version of goldwave rocks!!!

i like soundforge for editing, shntool for fixing sectors, and cdwav for tracking

WaveLab and CDWav is what I use too.
I can do everything I want to do do with this combo.

Wavelab can do anything cdwav could ever imagine doing. To make tracks in wavelab simply open the "marker" toolbar. Drop a "cd track start" marker where you want the cd to start, drop "cd track splice" markers where you want splices and it automatically drops a cd track end marker at the end of the file. Couldn't be any simpler..
Use Wavelab to burn your disks too if you want. Just go to New>basic audio cd. Select add tracks and select the file you just tracked and select write cd. Bam!

does Wavelab cut tracks on sector boundries?

i use a combo of sound forge 6.0 for transfers/normalizing and EAC for tracking
if anyone wants SF6.0, I can send the application file on a CDR, but it's probably available online

i use cd wav, you can record, and track, but i also use cool edit pro, you can get hacked versions all over the place... it retails for around $500, so the hacked version would be your way to go, but splitting tracks on it doesn't work, you can, but you get little gaps or at least from my experience. but it is great to EQ if you need, other editing, effects what not.. good luck.
