Sony DG60P and DG90P ....and yes I know the party line on these dats, but I have not had a problem in 3 years, with a deck I bought used that had run them for about 2 before that.  I also know plenty of people that have not had a problem.  With that being said, I understand theoretically why it would cause issues, but I am not convinced it happens in all cases...and if it does, I will get my deck fixed...will have been worth it to be able to run a 3 hour show and not have to swap tapes...

The best DAT tape always seems to go by the wayside. My all time favorite is Fuji. Once Fuji got out of the business it became impossible to get the 60 or 90 metre tapes. However, Cassette House's "house" brand is Fuji, now if I could only get them down in price a bit.

then we can get into a debate about how some people think they wear the heads faster, im not sure what side to believe so i just stick with 60's and an occasional 90 if i must do it, but i try not too, .02

I had a bad batch of sony dgp60 tapes recently. I decided that until I tape more often (or if at all if finances don't work out) I will be using Quantegy. They're pricey but fuckit.

Any tape is fine with me, ive only used sony and apogee.  I some Maxells that are next for use.

Note:  To anyone who buys Apogee tapes, be aware they are 90 minutes not 90 meters.  I had made that mistake.

Mainly ran Sony DG60P's, but I must of had a bad lot, as 4 tapes out of a box gave me problems (diginoise, sticking, etc.).
Using Maxell HS4 60m tapes now, w/o problems.

I have been using Maxell 90 minute tapes, but just bought 90 meter, HS-4/90s, after I learned of the length difference. I did learn of the possible head damage using these tapes so I bought the Maxell 60 meter tapes instead and have been using them exclusively.

So my question, should I keep the 90's (12 tapes), use them once and never use them again in my D8 or should I exchange them for 60's? I purchased them through Terrapin Tapes.

Still a newbie.

depending on who you tape, id keep the 90's......you never know when a set/show will bve slightly over 2 hrs......a 90 meter will get ya 3 hrs. and 7 mins.... ;)

i been using 90s mostly, then i ordered some 60s and got a bad batch, first outta 100 or so tapes, so i switched from dgp's to hs4's until they piss me off.

Okay, let me put it this way....Does anybody think that I will do damage to my DAT recorder using the 90 meter tapes once to record and once to playback for a transfer?

I have done searches on this subject and have not been able to come across any numbers as to the amount of usage to damage ratio. I am talking at the most 72 hours of usage with 12 90 meter tapes.

Thanks, yes I am paranoid.

All I use are Sony 90M in my D100 (which I bought used 3 years ago) and my PCM-R300 and both are still running great.  I have no doubt that there is a risk to do it this way, but no problems here yet...
