I Decided to try some Energizer Ultimate lithium AA batteries in my Tascam DR-07...I'm assuming that these are ok to use...but in the system settings you can set the unit for "ALKALINE" or "Ni-MH".  From what I understand all this does is allow the unit to configure itself to tell you approx how much battery life is remaining.

What setting should I put it on?  Does it matter?  I'm guessing I'll get no real accurate idea of remaining battery power?

You can't get a useful meter reading with lithiums. With most recorders using lithiums, I understand that the meter will read full until there is only a very small amount of battery life left. Possibly only minutes.

That's one reason I'd only use them in a pinch. They are quite expensive and even more so if you have to ditch them way before they are played out to be sure they don't fail on you.

After you use these up, I'd strongly recommend good rechargeables.

I, too, would recommend good Energizer rechargeable AA's. My local Sam's Club has 2300mah Energizer AA's for $20/per 8 batteries......If you dont have a AA charger for thiose new batteries, Sam's also sells a combo of 1 AA/AAA charger, 8 2300mah AA's and 4 AAA's for $30.00

If you're willing to go nearly $29 for 8 AA's (+ the cost of a charger) and don't mind mail order, I'd go for the Imedion 2400 mA low discharge batteries like these:

Low discharge are great. You don't have to charge them just before you use them and they seem to last much longer before you have to replace them. I started with the 2000 mA Eneloops and moved up to the Imedians due to greater capacity. The Eneloops were still working great after 2 years.
