Powering DPA 4090 mics
« on: July 22, 2012, 01:08:08 PM »
Hello, I just purchased a pair of 4090's off the yard sale. I'm using them with a Naiant Littlebox for 48v power.

I'm curious about the possibility of powering them with 9v plug in power from a battery box or preamp for when I want to go out with a (much) smaller, lighter kit, and only for casual, noncritical recording.  I would be giving up some dynamic range by going with a lower voltage, and it would be unbalanced, but I know that many people have their 4060 or 4061 mics adapted or rewired to use 9v power off such devices as CA Uglies. I happen to have a Y cable with female XLRs into a stereo miniplug and would like to try this some time. Any thoughts?

On a related topic, the 4090's can be powered with anything from 5v to 50v and use the same capsules as the 4060's. However, don't the XLR adapters for the 4060's just take 48v power and reduce it down to 9v? If, for some weird reason, you wired a 4060 or 4061 into an XLR and plugged it into 48v power, wouldn't you get smoke and sparks and other bad karma? Again, just curious, that's all.  :)

if that does not answer your question, i would suggest that you give christian poulsen (or bruce myer if he is still around...) at DPA in colorado a call and ask him directly - you can reach him at:
