Threads for "Light" stands
« on: February 07, 2007, 08:41:40 PM »
I just acquired a thread die for threading the 5/8" studs on lighting stands with the standard 5/8-27.
This should eliminate the need for all kinds of adaptors.
I will be trying it out this weekend
and, if all goes well,
will list it on the Loaner section for others to use.

(Note: I will be using a vise-grip to hold the die. Does anyone have an "official" die handle (for a 1-1/2 inch die) to contribute?)

Most "5/8" light stands are not just even width shafts subject to threading.  They are not like a metal rod, they are usually tapered upward, with a 5/8" head at the top.  You would need a perfectly cylindrical piece of tubing or solid metal to try to thread it, as far as I can tell.  Please let us know how it works out.

Finished my Boegen stand and two from Amvona (eBay); worked great.
The tops of my stands were 'uneven' but not tapered - 5/8" then 1/2" then back to 5/8.  If I find my digital camera will post pix

Will be interested to hear how it holds up.

I have a couple of Amvona stands, seems like the stud on top is pretty soft to hold a thread.  It is prettily easily dimpled by the point of the adapter screw.

AMvona's seemed to be a soft "brass" Still took an effort to cut the threads and they seem to hold all my accessories pretty well.
Not sure how to evaluate thread strength except thru time and abuse?
Any suggestions for s stress test?

Sounds like this worked out well.  Didn't find this in the loaner section through search.

Did you cut off the top portion of the stud?  If so, how?  Or did you just thread the top section before it reduces from 5/8 > 1/2?

The Bogen adapter doesn't fit well on my stand, so I'm looking to remove the top part of the stud, or thread it.

Any other suggestions?
