Topic: Ca 14-setup help

i just got my CA-14s today, and noticed that their cable isn't that long i would like to use them in an open setup, but the cable is only about 5ft long i have a mini jack extender, will it effect the sound? should i invest in a high quality one? also does anybody use the omnis and cards at the same time? which one should i run through the pre amp?, and which one is which one has a red strip around the mini jack?

I can't answer the cable questions. You should run both mics with a preamp or battery box for optimum performance. I do know for sure that the mic with the red strip is the omni and without is cards. Good luck!

I run the mics with a mini extender with gold connectors that Sound Professionals made me. Works fine.

Set with a red band near the 1/8th mini plug terminal are the omnis.

for my open setup I just use one of my small bags to attach to my stand and put my pre/recorder in there. It's big enough for both to fit in easily but keeps all my gear off the floor.

As for that question for running both sets, you'll prolly not be able to pull in two separate recordings without a second preamp. Each mic is designed for a different setting, there are plenty of discussion threads for that, just search. When I've run both, one of sets of mics (typicaly the omnis) are on stage.

i found a good mini jack extender that seems to work pretty well... although im having another problem... there is a consistant static throughout my recordings, i suspect it may be because i am using too high of a record level in my recorder and too low gain in the pre amp... is this correct?

Set your recorder to unity gain and get as much gain as you need from the pre. if you need more gain than that, only then increase the recorder's gain. I don't think that would account for the static though. I never got constant static with any of my rigs, so someone else will have to give you some ideas on what is causing it.

What recorder do you have? I assume your pre is the ST-9100? Knowing this will assist those trying to answer your question.

correct i have a 9100. my recorder is a Zoom H4n

Hopefully an H4n user will be able to help you. I have no idea of it's unity gain or what could be causing the static.

You could try the Zoom forum if no helpful response here. I don't think we have a lot of H4n users on this board.

If you're listening through headphones/headphone jack, that could be a result of the hiss.  Just a guess.

you can run the 9100 at 90% for even the loudest shows. then   
introduce level from your recorder.
