ISO : TLs vs AK40 vs 184s
« on: October 19, 2004, 11:06:58 PM »
Looking for some tapes to compare ADK TLs, Neumann AK40s and 184s.   Really like some true comparison(same show, same spot) sources if at all possible.  Through a wmod would be great too........man I'm picky.    :P

Having own and ran both TLs and KM140s...they both have their benefits, but in an ideal situation, I'd have to give the KM140s the advantage.

I've got a couple of shows from the same venue in the same location done with TLs and 140s if you're interested. Granted they're different shows...but otherwise they're both done with mics>V2>SBM1 in the exact same spot/heighth etc. One's Dickey Betts 6.10.04, the other's My Morning Jacket 6.20.04, both FOB/DFC 8' from the Exit/In in Nashville

As for KM140/KM184 comps...it's my general understanding they're the same mics with the exception of the 140's active cable option.
Right now nothing...in the past: Schoeps CMC6, AKG 480, AKG 460, AKG 414, MBHO 603a, Neumann KM100, ADK TL>Schoeps MK4, Schoeps MK2, Schoeps MK41, AKG ck61, AKG ck62, AKG ck63, Neumann AK40, Neumann AK50, MBHO ka200>Lunatec V2, Lunatec V3, Apogee Mini-Me, Oade M148, Oade M248, Sound Devices MP2, Sonosax SXM2>Sony (mod)SBM1, Apogee AD500>D7, D8, D100, M1, R1, R4, R09, iRiver HP120, Microtrack

The neumanns are billed that way, but it doesn't seem to really be the case.  I did a km184 vs km140 comparison for Marc Nutter at a LoS show with km184>v3 and km140>V3, same stand, same DIN pattern.  IMO the ak40s have a fuller bass.  I don't think I have both sources anymore, just the km140 source.  Nutter may still have it if he's still providing comparison tapes.
Mics: Microtech Gefell m20/m21 (nbob/pfa actives), Line Audio CM3, Church CA-11 cards
Preamp:  none <sniff>
Recorders:  Sound Devices MixPre-6, Sony PCM-M10, Zoom H4nPro

I have run both......I say the 40's are far superior to the 184's.....esp with the built in roll off in the bodies
