Check in google for "grounding technics turntable".

One technique is to ground through the sleeve of one of the RCA's. It involves some dissassembly and soldering at the point where the cables are connected.

Other than that I would run the ground right to the chassis of the receiver. (Which is what you suggested at the beginning). That should take care of the issue.
