Tagging Live Music for Plex
« on: August 15, 2018, 03:46:25 PM »
I've only recently set up Plex and have spent the last couple months working out most of the kinks with most of my media.  One problem I haven't solved is getting Plex to recognize my live albums, which are all tagged by Foobar and are properly identified both in Foobar and in Windows 7.  Plex will recognize the artist name and track titles, but the albums all show up as [Unknown Album], even though the albums are correctly tagged according to Foobar and Windows in the format YYYY-MM-DD - Venue, City, State.  Of course, I can manually input the album name into Plex, and I initially did that for the first batch of 30 that I uploaded, but then I decided to move everything to a new, larger hard drive.  Doing so forced me to rescan all the media and my manually-input tags were all lost.  I'm not going to input them all manually again without exhausting all my other options.  I know that Plex isn't ideal for live music given its current inability to play the tracks without gaps, but has anybody opted to use it anyway and perfected a system for tagging live shows in a way that Plex recognizes immediately?

Live Show Tagger in Foobar DOES NOT create an album name.  I found that I could create an action in Mp3Tag to bulk tag files for Cloudplayer (Which I abandoned due to poor playback.)  I'll look and see what I posted on their Google+ forum.

I was thinking about buying a lifetime pass for Plex but found that even with my trial it had A LOT of flubs and poor remote playback as well.

Live Show Tagger in Foobar DOES NOT create an album name.

True though it appears to in Foobar. If you select all files, right click > properties you can easily copy/paste the venue field into album.

I've worked up a video tutorial for tagging with foobar but need to add all the text. Been too busy but hope to finish it soon!

I use a foobar script function to create the Album field by combining the date and venue fields. At least that is what it is supposed to do.
If you have a problem relating to the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) please send an e-mail to us admins at LMA(AT)archive(DOT)org or post in the LMA thread here and we'll get on it.

That's what I've done.  I know it doesn't automatically populate the album field from the text file, but I have been manually populating it this way.  Windows shows the tags there, but Plex won't.

If Foobar can handle bulk tagging tens of thousands of live music files in a single directory then color me interested.  I know that I can do it manually show by show but not that I have 12 TB of music I have been going in and doing it little bits at a time.

Mp3Tag allows me to to a batch re-tag to add Album Title meta using the Format Value %Year% - %VENUE%.  Using it also allows one to keep existing metadata without stripping it clean when adding a new value

Finally got around to grabbing photos of the album tags as I see them in Windows, after having tagged them in Foobar (via right-click properties), and the resulting album in Plex.

Did this resolve itself with a library scan?  You may just need to go into settings and tell it to update the library/meta once media is added or something like that.

I am adding A LOT of data to my Plex right now and it wasn't populating fast enough for my liking at first, but its all good now.  I just have thousands and thousands of other's shows to tag.  !!

I'm going to add a couple of tips here for anyone following along at home.

I've always used the cookie cutter theme for Foobar.  While using Google the other day I came across a video on YouTube that wasn't more than 10 minutes long about how to customize the view.  Holy crap!

I no longer even need to drag and drop from my NAS into Foobar.  It reads my whole music directory and displays EVERYTHING in panes, including lyrics and cover art.  (I created a service that goes online and fetches cover art for all of my studio rips.)

With a couple of clicks I have tracks numbered, albums named, cover art downloaded, and I'm ready to roll.

Then, continuing on with naming conventions for Plex I discovered filebot 4.7.9 to rename all of my movies.  In about an hour I had all of them renamed and proper metadata corrected so Plex can assign real covers.

I'm getting really close to potting a dent in this collection.

Edit: I've attached a screenshot of my dual monitors so you can see the album art feature...

No, I've had no luck getting it to recognize my live albums.  I've scanned the library and updated the metadata several times.  From digging around the web, it seems it's important to have the metadata Agents defined correctly, but I don't know why mine aren't doing the job.  See attached.  What do yours look like?
