call me crazy...
but given the noise floor of the average "jam band" taping environment...I think one could VERY safely get away w/o using shock mounts at all...and never hear a difference.

Yeah, but you always have the antidipshit benefits.

email alan hyatt of PMI audio, he will send you a pair of replacement shockmounts FREE!!!
Alan kicks serious ass and shows that PMI is dedicated to standing behind the studio projects name and will support his product!

I've heard nothing but good tidings about Alan Hyatt...personally, I'm less than thrilled with my interaction with him (sent him an e-mail in early Nov hoping to get the upgraded shockmount and he replied at the end of Dec by saying I should call PMI). In did call PMI this afternoon and spoke with Justin and he's sending the upgraded shockmounts out to me (I'm paying FedEx because I'm hoping to get the mounts in time to tape tomorrow night...but you never know).

Thanks for all the info....

EDIT:

i totally disagree 100%

before getting my shocks a few years ago, the 480 would pick up A TON of unwanted rubmle and wahtnot, i would NEVER run w/ out shocks again unless i completetly had to

I disagree 100% with bean's 100% disagreement  ;)

I run shockmounts 25% of the time.  There really is no NEED to run mounts for what we do, unless, as nick said, you are clamping to a fixed part of the room.  It can't hurt to use em, but i don't think they are a necessity.

ymmv.
And the Sultans... yeah the Sultans play creole

True, and if PMI wasn't giving out the shocks for free, I'd willingly shell out the fifty bucks that I see them going for elsewhere.
