I patched out of some a few years back (http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=2982), sounded pretty good.

PM JNT.  He has 451s.  He ran them before he got the mod-460s.

I bought a pair in 1989. They are bright (4db HF boost from 10-15 kHz) and have a gradually rolled-off bass response. They are primarily used for miking acoustic guitars and cymbals, IIRC. They do have a "AKG-ness" that I like, but the sound IMHO is less smooth than the 460s and esp. the 480s, and lacks rich bass. I bought them because the guy at Manny's music said they were good and I couldn't scratch together the extra $100 to get a pair of 460s, regretfully. Can't say I personally recommend them. The re-released version might be better, but it sounds like they were shooting for the same profile as the old version.

I think they are nice mics, but not for our purposes.  At their price point you can pick up a pair of 461's which are much better IMO.  They're price seems quite bloated for their overall quality, I think its the nostalgic value stepping in.

I wonder how the JW mod would help these mics?

An elegant way of stating it, for sure.

i've got a few recordings w/them and they are nice, imo.
not as smooth at the later AKG condensers, but not lacking anything in what ive heard.

Treys set from Bonaroo 2003 is pretty bodacious sounding.
I can host it if anyone needs to hear it.  I believe it was 451 (re-issue) > wmod ua5

There is a guy in San Diego that runs the 451b mics in to a UA5.  I talked with him about his experiences with them and he liked them for PA recording.  I don't recall what mods were done to the UA5.

I'm not sure how much he comes on the site, or what his username is, so I can't point you to him.  Perhaps he will see the topic and chime in.
